Senators seek rollback of rules for Minnesota deer farms

The Senate Agriculture, Veterans, Broadband, and Rural Development Committee approved two bills that would undo deer farm-related statutes passed in recent years in Minnesota. The actions send the legislation to the Environment, Climate, and Legacy Committee.
The proposed bills, both introduced by Sen. Nathan Wesenberg, R-Little Falls, would reverse some deer farm regulations that took effect in past few years.

Another bill aims to end Minnesota’s shotgun zone for deer, this time giving counties the chance to decide

The Minnesota Senate is considering eliminating the state’s shotgun zone again this year, but it’s seeking that change in a different manner than that of last year’s bill, which fell apart as legislators sought certain county exemptions.
The 2025 version of the bill, S.F. 107, authored by Sen. Steve Drazkowski, R-Mazeppa, would eliminate the shotgun zone requirement but give counties the opportunity to make the decision for themselves. Through county-level decision making, each county board would take public comment and determine the best option for their areas.

Minnesota Supreme Court ruling puts a hold on state House of Reps business

On Friday, Jan. 24, the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled in favor of the DFL argument that 68 members must be present to carry out any official business within the Minnesota House of Representatives.
That ruling effectively voids all the work House Republicans had conducted since the session officially kicked off Jan. 14. Since the start of the session, the House Republicans’ maintained that only 67 members needed to be present to conduct business because there were presently only 133 seated members of the chamber.

What’s next for Minnesota deer permit areas where CWD was confirmed for the first time?

On Monday, Jan. 27, the Minnesota DNR reported that hunters in deer permit areas 266 and 701 harvested chronic wasting disease-positive deer during the firearms season, bringing to three the number of new DPAs where CWD was discovered in the past two months.
Both new positive cases were bucks – one taken from DPA 266 near Hawley in northwestern Minnesota’s Clay County (west of Detroit Lakes), and the other taken in DPA 701 near Greenfield on the northwestern edge of Hennepin County in the Twin Cities metro area. The hunters submitted tissue samples via the DNR’s partner sampling program which consists mostly of taxidermists.

Minnesota’s 2025 elk survey completed, and thermal imaging may help future counts

After a year during which a lack of snow precluded the Minnesota DNR’s annual survey of northwestern elk, this year’s attempt went off without a hitch, state officials say.
“We were able to do it this year, and snow conditions were darn good. We have actually more snow up in the far northwest than a lot of places in the state,” said Blane Klemek, the DNR’s northwest regional wildlife manager.

Winter Asian carp netting effort comes up empty on Minnesota waters of the Mississippi

After a team of commercial fishers spent the morning punching holes in the ice, feeding a seine through the holes, and using various sounds to drive fish toward the net, the Asian carp they hoped to net were no-shows.
Despite knowing there’s a school of Asian carp holed up for the winter under the ice of the Mississippi River east of Winona, Minn., commercial fisherman Tim Adams and his team couldn’t drum them up the direction they wanted on Wednesday, Jan. 15.
“Even with driving techniques, sometimes the fish will not move toward the net.”

Outdoors-related bills already in play during early stages of Minnesota Legislative session

During this year’s legislative session, the Minnesota DNR’s efforts will be focused more on the budget than on pushing policy, which had been a primary focus in previous sessions.
“We’ve done so much policy in the past couple of years, we’re just going to take a little break on any major policy this session and focus really on our financial needs,” said Bob Meier, DNR assistant commissioner.
