Auditor finds few flaws in Minnesota DNR’s Outdoor Heritage Fund grant management

The state’s Office of the Legislative Auditor recently conducted a performance audit looking into the Minnesota DNR’s allocation of Outdoor Heritage Fund grants. The auditor found that the DNR generally complied and effectively executed its role as the fiscal agent overseeing reimbursement for OHF-approved projects from year to year.
“I was pleased to read that our DNR partner really had minor findings. It was overall a very clean report, which was great to see,” said Kristina Smitten, the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council’s executive director.

Trappers seeing some action in Minnesota’s south furbearer zone

In the second year of allowing trappers to harvest bobcats and fishers in Minnesota’s south furbearer zone, several trappers have registered some of the predatory furbearers since the season started on Saturday, Jan. 3.
“I haven’t been necessarily hearing much from trappers, apart from it seems like people are getting after them again,” said Ryan Tebo, DNR assistant area wildlife manager in Rochester.

Southeast Minnesota CWD prevalence rates increase

Around this time last year, the DNR announced that deer permit areas 646, 647, and 648 in southeastern Minnesota had entered a new phase of infection – “endemic,” according to its chronic wasting disease response plan.
That meant the disease was prevalent in about 5% or more of the deer herd in those DPAs.

Minnesota hunter takes massive Roosevelt’s elk that could be an Alaskan record

A day after traveling from Minnesota to Afognak Island in Alaska for the opening day of hunting for Roosevelt’s elk on the island, Chase Parker, of Barnum, took down a 6-by-6 elk.
And it wasn’t just any elk. The animal’s rack scored 313-5⁄8 inches, making it a contender for the Boone & Crockett Club’s highest-scoring Roosevelt’s elk from Alaska. Official Boone & Crockett measurer Carey Ferrell said that once B&C accepts the measurement, Parker’s elk will unseat the previous Alaskan Roosevelt’s record-breaker of 291-5⁄8, set in 2016.

Organization in Crookston, Minn., is giving kids outdoor tools

Crookston’s Get Kids Outdoors-Adam Parnow Memorial, Inc. was borne from the untimely passing of Adam Parnow in 2023. His parents, Fred and Beth Parnow, have connected the community through the outdoors nonprofit in his memory.
“It’s a tragic loss, obviously, but how do you make something good out of it? I think he would think we’re doing the right thing,” Fred Parnow said.

Minnesota’s ‘CWD hunt’ harvest tops last year’s

As the 2025 archery deer season neared its Dec. 31 end, Minnesota almost had its final tally on chronic wasting disease from the hunting season.
During the late-CWD hunt from Friday, Dec. 19, to Sunday, Dec. 21, hunters harvested about 1,074 deer, which is about 24% higher than last year’s harvest of 869 deer. The 2025 season was just shy of doubling the 2023 late-CWD hunt when hunters harvested about 571 deer.
