Minnesota study detects PFAS in deer liver, muscle tissue

From 2021 to 2023, the Minnesota DNR, Minnesota Department of Health, and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency tested white-tailed deer that live on or around sites with possible PFAS contaminants to discover if so-called “forever chemicals” might be found in muscle and liver tissue.
Both types of tissues were found to have varying levels of the environmental contaminant.

Lynx kits documented in Minnesota’s Voyageurs National Park for first time

Last September, one of the hundreds of trail cameras that the Voyageurs Wolf Project has deployed in and around Voyageurs National Park caught a glimpse of a rare lynx event that previously had been undocumented.
“It was exciting because it was the first time that kittens had been documented in Voyageurs National Park,” said Thomas Gable, the project lead.

An upbeat outlook for Minnesota’s Lake Mille Lacs in 2026? Open water regs discussed

While the Minnesota DNR won’t lock in its official open-water regulation for Lake Mille Lacs until sometime in March, the February Mille Lacs Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting aired members’ call for a liberal start in May.
The state’s allowable walleye harvest for the big lake in 2026 is lower this year at 105,300 pounds from 113,600 pounds last year.

Long-time Minnesota DNR naturalist settles in as coordinator for Becoming an Outdoors Woman

Last summer, when longtime Becoming an Outdoors Woman Coordinator Linda Bylander retired, experienced DNR state park naturalist Linda Radimecky stepped into the role. She says it has felt like a natural fit.
“I taught a lot of fly-fishing classes and knot-tying classes, and survival kind of stuff, so I knew the programming for a long time,” Radimecky said.

Reported wolf conflicts in Minnesota drop in 2025

In 2025, the USDA- Wildlife Services verified wolf damage at 76 different locations and received a total of 185 complaints – down from 252 complaints in 2024. While last year’s total declined from 2024, the 2025 tally more closely aligns with the 10-year average of 188 complaints per year.
Similarly in line with the 10-year average, about 55% of the past year’s complaints were verified by the wildlife services’ team.

Carp deterrent on Minnesota waters of the Mississippi might need design extension

The Minnesota DNR is inching closer on the Lock and Dam 5 carp deterrent as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officially began designing the underwater Acoustic Deterrent System (uADS) at the site.
Based on statutory project timeline of completing the deterrent by June 30, 2029, Carli Wagner, DNR project coordinator, said the team remains on track to meet that overall deadline.

Minnesota’s Waterville hatchery nears end of design phase

After receiving $24 million in 2023, the Waterville hatchery project is nearing the end of its planning phase, with about 90% of it completed. If scheduling remains on track, the Minnesota DNR and its construction team could break ground sometime this year for the new facility.
“We’re at that 90% design phase now. So, making sure that all of our hopes, wishes, and dreams, if you will, are all included in this design, and then making sure our needs are met,” said Mandy Erickson, the DNR’s fisheries operations consultant.

Sick deer tests positive for CWD in Minnesota Deer Permit Area 604

In December, someone reported a sick deer in Minnesota’s Deer Permit Area 604, around Brainerd and Crosslake in Crow Wing County. The animal eventually tested positive for chronic wasting disease.
DPA 604 almost made it three consecutive years with zero CWD positive cases reported, which could have qualified for the area to be removed as a CWD management zone.

Will hook-and-bullet issues get lost during Minnesota’s 2026 legislative session?

With the legislative session set to begin on Tuesday, Feb. 17, various nonprofit organizations and the Minnesota DNR want to “move the needle” on several issues this year. But most aren’t expecting much in terms of environment policy work from state legislators thanks to more pressing issues likely on the docket.
