U.S. anglers bringing food into Canada could see 25% tariff

For anglers, outdoor enthusiasts, or any other tourists planning to enter Canada via personal vehicle, the international tariff tussle could impact their wallets for the foreseeable future.
The Canadian Minister of Finance and Minister of Foreign Affairs has placed 25% tariffs on goods originating from or made in the United States as they cross the border northbound, and that includes some personal groceries. According to the Canada Border Services Agency, the extra surtax when entering the country will remain in place as a countermeasure until the United States eliminates its tariffs on Canadian goods.

Lynx spotted in residential ‘dog pen’ near Minnesota’s Grand Marais

Out of seemingly nowhere, Sarah Hamilton, owner of Trail Center Lodge on Poplar Lake in Grand Marais, Minn., locked her eyes on a Canadian lynx prowling in the dog pen outside her window.
“It’s wonderful to see (a lynx) any time. Any time. We do see them from time to time, but it’s not that common,” Hamilton said.
While she said she’d seen a lynx before, she hadn’t seen one that big, comparing it to her 100-pound, 10-month-old rottweiler.

Minnesota home hosts denning bear and her cubs under porch

Pulling into a residential neighborhood in Crosslake and parking outside Tim and Vanessa Greer’s home, it isn’t obvious who they are hosting. Soon it’s revealed: a sow bear and two cubs beneath the couple’s front porch.
“I don’t think we’ll be coming over to this part of the house, you know, we’ll just go in and out through the garage,” Tim Greer said.

Minnesota House bill offers exception for cervidae importation for zoos, raising CWD-related concerns

A bill amendment aims to make an exception to a current law that prevents the importation of cervidae into Minnesota from a state with a positive CWD test in the past five years.
H.F. 434 would open the door to allow zoos in Minnesota, accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association and other USDA-licensed facilities, to import cervidae from verified zoos in other states.

DNR postpones elk research project in northwest Minnesota

Kicking off the new year in a new job with the Minnesota DNR, Amanda McGraw, the agency’s deer, moose, and elk scientist, has settled into a role that combines some of her greatest interests into a single job.
“It allows me to continue pursuing those passions for researching our large ungulate species like moose and deer and elk within the state. That’s what made it a once in a lifetime for me,” McGraw said.
This month, McGraw and her team had planned to begin collaring elk in the northwestern corner of Minnesota to gather more data on the herd’s population dynamics. However, that research project will be delayed from starting until next winter – 2025-26.

Minnesota DNR to assess limit for perch on Mille Lacs after harvest tops quota

When the DNR received the latest Lake Mille Lacs creel survey data, it became evident that state anglers have taken more yellow perch than the allowed harvest limit for the year. As a result, the agency has begun examining how to proceed with perch bag limits for the remainder of the season rather than closing it entirely.
“We take our safe harvest level very seriously. I really want to make sure that people understand that. But we’re in new territory with perch here,” said Brad Parsons, DNR fisheries chief.

Minnesota’s Keep It Clean Coalition seeks state agency home; and more dollars sought for wolf, elk depredation funding

After working to pass legislation that prohibits leaving trash and human waste on the ice during ice-fishing season in 2023, the grassroots Keep It Clean Coalition is eying the next step: consolidation under a state agency.
H.F. 1120, authored by Rep. Andrew Myers, R-Tonka Bay, would call for the creation of a statewide Keep It Clean program through one of the agencies, which would then oversee grant dollars for local entities to use.
“They realized that volunteer organizations alone can’t stay ahead of the environmental concerns.”

New Minnesota DNR budget includes boat AIS surcharge, park fee hikes

The DNR presented its proposed biennial budget to the Senate Environment, Climate, and Legacy Committee on Thursday, Feb. 27. It includes proposed fee increases on boat registration, state parks permits, and water-use permits.
The DNR seeks to increase the AIS (aquatic invasive species) surcharge on boat registration fees, depending on the size of the vessel, and to allocate those dollars to AIS research and local entities’ efforts to mitigate the spread of AIS.

Sea Grant modeling takes aim at predicting ice-out on Minnesota lakes

Following the March 3 fish house removal date for two-thirds of Minnesota, many anglers will have their eyes set on the open-water season and waiting for ice to crack up.
Coming back online with a few modifications, Minnesota Sea Grant’s Lakes Ice-Out Clock will help outdoor recreators and business owners better nail down when ice will clear off the lake they’re interested in.
