Minnesota DNR monitoring results of trapping changes

With a calendar date extension for the Minnesota otter season and geographic extension for bobcat and fisher harvest this winter, trappers were eager to take advantage of new opportunities, says DNR Research Biologist John Erb. Despite that, he suspects that harvest totals at the end of their seasons will be normal, and possibly lower.

Minnesota DNR Roundtable includes discussion about elk and northeastern reintroduction

With the Fond du Lac Band of Chippewa’s reintroduction of elk to northeastern Minnesota a year away, the DNR is continuing to monitor the health of the northwestern herd. Those animals likely will be the transplant subjects.
“The good news is that these animals are really very healthy,” DNR Wildlife Health Group Leader Michelle Carstensen said during a DNR Roundtable presentation before roughly 40 people on Friday, Jan. 10 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bloomington.

Minnesota DNR warns anglers to beware of ice heaves that are more prevalent this winter

While this season’s lake ice already has delivered a better start to ice fishing season than the past two Minnesota winters, reports of numerous pressure ridges have demanded some caution among anglers.
“Just because somebody is out there with a vehicle and a truck, doesn’t mean you need to be out there with a vehicle and a truck. Don’t let that be the test. Test (the ice) yourself,” said CO Bobby Stringer, of Wheaton.

North Dakota’s Courtney Homan finds her passion as an adult-onset hunter

As Courtney Homan set out on her first solo hunt in eastern Montana in search of an antelope about two years ago, there was some trepidation in her step.
However, with each yard she took farther away from civilization, the confidence in her skill set and herself continued to grow. She managed to chase an antelope for a few miles until it crossed onto private property, rendering her trip unsuccessful in one regard, but still successful as a whole.

Despite concerns, plan for Asian carp barrier on schedule in Minnesota

After the Legislature almost a year ago green-lit the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council-approved carp barrier at Lock and Dam 5 on the Mississippi River, the preparatory work continues behind the scenes.
Kelly Pennington, an invasive species unit supervisor for the Minnesota DNR, offered an update to the project during the LSOHC meeting on Friday, Jan. 3.

Culling to cease in parts of Minnesota’s southeast; how will that impact CWD prevalence rates?

While a chronic wasting disease predictive model is showing that prevalence of the disease could reach almost 15% in Minnesota’s Fillmore County whitetails by 2028, it’s too early to nail down its prevalence another five years down the line.
“I didn’t look too much further ahead. … The further out you go, the less reliable the predictions are, and that’s just the case with all modeling,” said Dr. Sergey Berg, assistant professor of computer and information science at the University of St. Thomas, and the designer of the CWD model.

Minnesota hunting trio with Capable Partners organization hits it big with 2024 bucks

It appeared as a bobbing, black dot on the horizon, hundreds of yards away. Jason Sorenson, who was perched in a treestand, got the attention of his friend, Evan Newton, in a blind below and directed his gaze toward the movement.
Newton almost didn’t believe his eyes as the “dot” began to take shape, becoming a buck that was coming toward him, albeit somewhat in the wrong direction. Newton, sitting in the blind, had to rotate his power chair about 90 degrees and reposition his aim with his crossbow to point the bolt to where he wanted it to go.

CWD endemic in southeast trio of deer permit areas in Minnesota

The Minnesota DNR told Outdoor News this week that deer permit areas 646, 647, and 648 would be entering a new phase of management due to the high prevalence of CWD across the landscape in those areas.
“In those three permit areas, we have now had enough disease (prevalence) that we’re in the endemic phase,” said Michelle Carstensen, the DNR’s wildlife health group leader.
