Minnesota’s Voyageurs Wolf Project releases its 2022-23 wolf report showing stable population

The Voyageurs Wolf Project released its annual wolf population report last week that reveals a stable population of wolves in the border country around Voyageurs National Park.
Tom Gable, project lead for the project, said the average pack size decreased because packs are raising fewer pups. The territory size also decreased, but Gable has seen more overlapping territories. The project expanded from 14 to 20 territories because of the staff and support the project received last year. The efforts are funded by Legislative-Citizens Commission on Minnesota Resources/Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, along with private donors.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lifts ban on Minnesota DNR grant funds

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will make available disputed Minnesota DNR Statewide Wildlife Habitat Management Grant funds, according to a Tuesday, Oct. 3 letter sent from the USFWS to the DNR.
The two grants include $4.065 million from fiscal year 2021-22 and $17.553 million for FY2023-24 from the Statewide Wildlife Habitat Management Grant program. Dave Olfelt, DNR Fish and Wildlife Division director, said timber harvest on state wildlife management areas and aquatic management areas remains paused for now.

13-year-old takes huge bull, shares special hunt with father during Minnesota elk season

The Minnesota Vikings may have lost on Sunday, Sept. 24, but 13-year-old Ryker Copp definitely won.
After watching the Vikings, Copp went out and shot an 8-by-10 elk during his once-in-a-lifetime hunt. More than a week later, he’s still shaking from the series of events. He’s most happy about sharing a once-in-a-lifetime memory with his father, Jerred Copp.
“I can’t even explain it, it was just really fun,” Ryker said. “I’m pretty excited because we can hang up (my elk) next to my dad’s (elk).”

Minnesota’s fall turkey, prairie chicken seasons begin Sept. 30

Minnesota’s fall turkey and prairie chicken hunting seasons will open on Saturday, Sept. 30. The two seasons may open at the same time, but the prairie chicken hunt will have limited licenses versus the turkey hunt, which has unlimited tags. Turkey season closes Oct. 29, while the prairie chicken hunt ends Oct. 8.
The prairie chicken season includes 125 licenses for lottery winners. Meanwhile, turkey hunters are wondering if the fall season will see high harvest numbers like the 2022 fall season.

Minnesota’s St. Louis River gets a stock of sturgeon fry in efforts to boost population

The Minnesota DNR has completed its first stocking of lake sturgeon in the St. Louis River since 2000. The stocking came after seeing restored habitat and spawning in the river and a desire to increase the population.
The DNR stocked 375 6-inch tagged lake sturgeon fry into the estuary at Duluth’s Chambers Grove Park on Sept. 12. Another 375 sturgeon are being sent to the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa with the goal of stocking in the upper St. Louis River. Lake sturgeon stocking took place periodically from 1983 to 2000 with 13 different year-classes being planted.

Woodcock hunt – a good one for beginners – set to begin in Minnesota on Sept. 23

Various hunting seasons have begun during the past few weekends, and the woodcock season will get under way Saturday.
According to the Minnesota DNR, the woodcock population has decreased steadily over the past two or three decades, but there’s plenty of forest habitat across the state to ensure a successful timberdoodle hunt. The DNR recently hosted a webinar on the topic of woodcock hunting, and Lindsey Shartell, the department’s northeast regional wildlife manager, led the conversation.

Minnesota DNR K9 unit trains for busy fall season

The Minnesota DNR hosted a K9 training event on Monday, Sept. 18, at Carlos Avery State WMA. The agency exhibited different training techniques for the canines.
The DNR has five K9 dogs across the state, and they’re trained in various categories including: zebra mussel detection, wildlife detection, evidence recovery, people tracking, criminal apprehension, fish detection, and officer protection. With fishing season still open and hunting underway, autumn is busy for conservation officers and the K9 units.

Minnesota’s Mille Lacs Fisheries Advisory Committee talks muskies, latest walleye harvest info

The Mille Lacs Fisheries Advisory Committee met Sept. 6 at McQuoid’s Inn in Isle for a status report on Mille Lacs fish and fishing.
The meeting didn’t focus on any specific regulation changes or population assessments. Instead, it reviewed presentations on diets of the various fish in the lake and current muskie regulations, because there could be a change – based on feedback – of having more muskies stocked in the big lake.

Minnesota’s ruffed grouse, sharptail seasons kick off Saturday: What can hunters expect this fall?

Minnesota’s grouse-hunting season begins Saturday, and all signs suggest a mostly successful brooding season for ruffed and sharp-tailed grouse. Sharp-tailed grouse may be hunted only in the Northwest Zone again this year.
Mike Chalich, president of Minnesota Sharp-tailed Grouse Society, and James Govednik, president of the Rum River Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society, say that favorable conditions aided both nesting and brood-rearing of grouse this year.
“What is also a very good sign is the recruitment period – that weather was very good,” Govednik said. “The brood sizes are good and there are a lot of broods, so all the signs are pointing to a good fall.”
