Minnesota’s 2023 bear harvest is below average, so far

About one-third of the way into Minnesota’s bear-hunting season, hunters have experienced serious weather extremes. The result? Bear harvest currently is 30% below last year’s harvest at this point in the season, according to a preliminary report from Dan Stark, the Minnesota DNR’s large carnivore specialist.
The season began with unbearable temperatures reaching nearly 100 degrees in some areas. But halfway through last week, temperatures had dropped into normal ranges, reaching highs of 70s and even 60s in the northern part of the state. Hunters faced periods of wind, rain, sun, clouds, and everything in between.

Minnesota Outdoor Heritage Council looks ahead to 2025 fiscal year proposals

The Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council met earlier this summer to discuss a couple of topics including the proposals for the 2025 fiscal year. The council received 53 requests totaling over $300 million, and presentations of proposals were planned in August.
The Outdoor Heritage Fund was one of four funds created by the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment and receives one-third of the money raised by the tax increase.

Roseau siblings kill two massive bull elk during first days of Minnesota season

Gary Przekwas, 58, and Sharlene Peterson, 63, have applied for the elk hunting license lottery since the hunt began in 2008 for zones 20 and 30 in the Kittson Central hunting area. The brother-sister duo have dreamed about hunting elk in Minnesota for years.
In 2023, they drew once-in-a-lifetime licenses and in recent days, each of them shot a bull. Przekwas’ elk was nontypical with 10-by-11 antlers and Peterson’s elk had a 7-by-7 rack. Both created a memory that’ll last a lifetime.
“I was in disbelief the whole time,” Przekwas said. “I don’t know how many prayers I’ve said, but I’m so grateful for (the opportunity).”

Minnesota’s elk-hunting season kicks off Sept. 9 in northwest: Here’s what hunters can expect

The elk-hunting season kicks off Saturday, and 17 Minnesotans have been selected for once-in-a-lifetime elk licenses. Zones 20 and 30 in northwestern Minnesota will have seasons during the next couple months for hunters anticipating a big, trophy bull.
The first season will begin Saturday, and there are three separate seasons for elk hunters. Zone 20 will include 12 licensed hunters, while Zone 30 will include five licensed hunters. In addition, 30 Red Lake Nation tribal members will have licenses for the band’s annual elk hunt.

Previewing Minnesota’s archery deer hunt 2023: Enter crossbows for all

The countdown has started for the archery deer season in Minnesota, and there’s a mixture of excitement along with a few unknowns. The season kicks off Sept. 16, and the biggest unknown centers around the new regulation that allows the use of crossbows for everyone.
The new regulation passed by the Minnesota Legislature in May will allow more hunters to hunt the archery season and apply some pressure on deer throughout the state. Todd Froberg, the Minnesota DNR’s big-game program coordinator, said he’s not worried about the crossbow change affecting deer populations significantly in terms of total harvest, but there are a few concerns heading into the season.

Former intern Nate Huck returns as game-bird consultant for Minnesota DNR

In 2009, Nate Huck interned for the Minnesota DNR with the shallow lakes program. Now, he’s back in the same DNR office, in Brainerd, 14 years later, this time as resident game-bird consultant, a newly created position within the department.
Huck has spent time in Wisconsin, Texas, Wyoming, and Pennsylvania tackling various wildlife biology jobs. He’s looking forward to returning to the Midwest and crafting the new position to benefit Minnesota wildlife, and potentially hunters.

A river’s appeal: A Q&A with Minnesota fishing guide Darren Troseth

Darren Troseth has been fishing for 20 years and has been a fishing guide for the past six years. He typically guides on the Minnesota, Mississippi, and St. Croix rivers.
Troseth said he doesn’t look at being a guide as a job, but rather an opportunity to meet some fun people, create fun memories, and be on the water for part of the day. Troseth said he wants people to understand the beauty of river fishing while understanding the risks of it, too. Outdoor News sat down with Troseth to go through some topics.

Land transfer to Leech Lake band nears in Minnesota’s Chippewa National Forest

The Chippewa National Forest is providing a public comment opportunity regarding the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Restoration Act’s Land Transfer Project. The act will transfer about 11,760 acres of public land currently managed by the Chippewa National Forest to the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Indian Affairs to be held in trust for the benefit of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe.
Michael Stansberry, forest supervisor for the Chippewa National Forest, said that of the original 11,760 acres of land, some is underwater or has access or easement issues, so the U.S. Forest Service and Leech Lake band are working together to determine what acreage is best to transfer within the Chippewa forest. He also added that the 11,760 acres will not affect hunting areas or accesses to lakes within the CNF.
