CWD in Minnesota: Here’s what hunters should know for the 2023 season

Minnesota’s archery deer-hunting season has been under way for almost a month, and the firearms season kicks off Nov. 4. One of the biggest discussions revolving around deer-hunting this season is chronic wasting disease.
CWD was a focal point for legislators throughout the legislative session, and the DNR is adding new regulations, restrictions, and opportunities to try and stop the spread of CWD in the state.

Minnesota DNR tests channel cats as it seeks stocking sources

The Minnesota DNR was on the hunt for catfish last week on the Sauk River Chain of Lakes. Two DNR fisheries biologists traveled to the chain Oct. 2-4 in search of catfish to be sampled for channel catfish virus (CCV) and a bacteria, Edwardsiella ictaluri.
Mario Travaline, a DNR West-Metro fisheries specialist, and Nick Heseltine, a DNR hatchery worker in Waterville, had trouble Oct. 2 and Oct. 3 finding catfish as trap nets and gill nets were catching other kinds of fish, but not many cats. The two pivoted and traveled to the Minnesota River to catch a large enough sample to perform testing on the catfish.

’Tis the season: Spruce top theft rises in Minnesota’s forests

During the past couple of weeks, there have been steady reports of tree top theft in the northeast part of Minnesota. As the holiday season approaches, the number of thefts typically increases, DNR officials say.
Two weeks ago, a report from DNR Conservation Officer Anthony Bermel, from the Babbitt area, indicated he seized 1,565 spruce tops and charged two people with timber trespass, decorative materials theft, and littering. This past week, DNR CO Shane Zavodnik, from the Virginia area, spent time investigating several spruce top theft cases.

Minnesota pheasant opener a mixed bag for state’s hunters

The August roadside survey gave many pheasant hunters optimism heading into this fall.
The pheasant-hunting season opened on Saturday, Oct. 14, and hunters found a mix of success across the southern region of Minnesota. Among conservation officer reports and wildlife area office sources, the common theme for the state pheasant opener was that many hunters got out, but success rates varied depending on location.

Minnesota DNR seeks help in wolf kill, duck-dump investigation

The Minnesota DNR is looking for help in finding the person or people responsible for a pair of central Minnesota poaching incidents discovered on Friday, Oct. 13.
Joe Albert, the agency’s Division of Enforcement communications coordinator, said the DNR believes the cases, which include a dead gray wolf and nearly two dozen ducks, involve two separate poaching incidents. One incident was a timber wolf shot and killed near Buckman in Morrison County, and the other incident was the dumping of over a dozen ducks nearby in Little Falls.

Minnesota DNR places transmitters to better understand blue suckers and gar

Blue suckers and longnose gar are native fish and not as popular as game fish like walleyes, northern pike, and bass, but the two species are important to the many rivers in Minnesota.
As part of a research effort, Joel Stiras, the Minnesota DNR’s large river specialist, traveled to the St. Croix River on Oct. 2 to place transmitters in blue suckers and gar. The transmitters will allow Stiras and the DNR to monitor their movement and understand where the fish consistently swim in the river.

Neighbors decry unpermitted ditch digging that altered wetland in southwestern Minnesota

Officials say a farmer in southwestern Minnesota’s Lyon County violated the state’s Wetland Conservation Act and public waters laws by excavating deeper than allowed in a ditch and a cattail slough, as well as interfering with Roggeman Marsh, a public water.
Jance Vandelanotte is the farmer who violated state rules, according to a Minnesota DNR voluntary restoration agreement provided to Outdoor News. Now, the farmer is on a voluntary restoration plan with the Lyon Soil and Water Conservation District and the DNR to restore the ditch, slough, and marsh.
