South Dakota caps nonresident archery hunters on public land

Members of the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission have voted unanimously to place a limit on the number of out-of-state archery hunters who may pursue deer and antelope on public land in the state.
With the new limit in place, the GF&P will issue no more than 2,200 nonresident archery deer tags and 450 nonresident archery antelope tags good for use on public land.

Birders of all skill levels are invited to Iowa Ornithologists’ Union spring meeting, May 5 – 7, in West Des Moines

The Iowa Ornithologists’ Union is celebrating it’s 100-year anniversary as part of its annual spring meeting, May 5-7, at the Stine Barn and grounds, 4000 Turnberry Drive, in West Des Moines. Anyone who enjoys birding is invited to attend and there is no requirement to attend the entire weekend.

Shad restoration efforts in the Susquehanna River continue

As part of an effort to restore American shad in New York, DEC Fisheries staff, in collaboration with the PA Fish and Boat Commission, recently stocked 322,000 American shad fry into the Susquehanna River in Endicott.
As in previous stockings, fish were marked so if they are recaptured, DEC staff will be able to obtain useful information on fish growth, movement, and stocking success.

Two Iowa wildlife areas gain 94.3 acres for $675K

Purchase of the parcels, bordering the Leo Grau Wildlife Management Area in Buena Vista County and the Little Lost Island Lake/Dewey’s Pasture Wildlife Management Area in Clay County, was approved on a 4-2 vote.  Voting in favor were members Margo Underwood, Uriah Hansen, Tammi Kircher and Marcus Branstad.  Voting against were members Laura Hommel and Laura Foell.

Antlerless deer quotas raised in 15 Iowa counties

Deer hunting opportunities will increase for hunters looking to harvest antlerless deer in Iowa, following action on March 9 by the Iowa Natural Resources Commission. Quotas for antlerless deer will increase 15 counties, while quotas will decrease in eight counties, according to the unanimous vote taken at the commission’s regular meeting in Des Moines.

Heavy snow in North Dakota this winter plugged sloughs, and ice created even more problems for both man and beast. Not much we can do about the elements. The key for wildlife surviving winter is having cover from the elements and a little food helps, too.
