Wisconsin Natural Resources Board approves fish, game rule changes from spring hearings

Eight new hunting rules and three fishing rules with statewide application were approved by the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) at its June 28 meeting.
The rules now can be reviewed by the legislature and must be signed by Gov. Tony Evers before they go into effect.

Wisconsin’s spring season turkey tally up 8.7% from 2022

More Wisconsin Thanksgiving tables will be graced by wild birds this November, as hunters registered 42,439 turkeys during the spring season, a 19% increase over the previous year.
Taylor Finger, DNR game bird ecologist, said that because there were some weather drawbacks, hunting success could be considered even better than the numbers indicate.

Wisconsin’s 2023 deer hunts set; Iron County is bucks only

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) adopted final regulations for the 2023 deer season following an extended discussion over a difference between recommendations by the DNR and Marathon County Deer Advisory Council (CDAC).
The Marathon CDAC reduced the private land bonus antlerless permit level from last year’s 2,000 to 1,800 this fall. The DNR recommended to the NRB keeping the county’s bonus permit level at 2,000.

Carbon credits earning money for northern Wisconsin landowners

Many northern Wisconsin woodland owners may now enroll in a new program where they will get paid – not for their wood, but for the carbon their trees are storing.
The new program sponsored by the American Forest Foundation’s (AFF) Family Forest Carbon Program (FFCP), in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, opened this spring in Ashland, Iron, and Vilas counties, and will open in another 27 northern counties in July. The program also is open in Minnesota and Michigan.

Commentary: Wisconsin public needs real CWD information

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) tried to dress up a pig recently, but didn’t use enough lipstick to win any kind of ribbon.
The DNR’s effort came May 24 during its update of the 2022 CWD season at the Natural Resources Board’s (NRB) Madison meeting. The DNR appeared to try camouflaging its lack of progress on controlling CWD.

Retired Wisconsin wildlife researcher lists needed changes to state’s deer program

If Wisconsin had its own Dr. Deer, it would have to be Keith McCaffery.
McCaffery, 84, of Rhinelander, was a longtime Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wildlife researcher. He retired twice from the agency. Once officially; once unofficially.
He officially retired in 2000, but he never left his desk, as he stayed on as a volunteer for another 20 years, willing to share the expertise he gained over 37 years as a biologist specializing in deer.

Wisconsin DNR to bring 8 wildlife rules to Natural Resources Board June 28

At the Natural Resources Board’s May 24 meeting in Madison, the board heard that the DNR will bring eight of nine regulation questions to the NRB for approval June 28 in Milwaukee.
The DNR had presented all nine questions to the public at the spring conservation hearings in April. The one question the DNR does not plan to advance is the proposal to expand the October youth deer hunt from two days to four days. Expanding the youth deer season received 3,492 votes in favor, but 3,649 votes against.
