Wisconsin Natural Resources Board panel seems to support wolf plan

Recent revisions to the DNR’s updated wolf plan drew plenty of comments and questions from five Natural Resources Board (NRB) members at their Sept. 27 meeting, with all five sounding supportive of the plan.
Comments showed they feel the new plan is critical to managing wolves, will encourage wolf delisting, and help citizens deal with problems wolves cause. Randy Johnson, DNR large carnivore specialist, gave board members a brief report on the plan that will come to the board for approval Oct. 25 in Madison.

Coho salmon fishing, beauty of Mendenhall Glacier highlights of Alaskan trip

If there’s anything more exciting than the call of, “Fish on!” it has to be, “Two fish on!”
Battling two coho salmon at the same time by father and son was a highlight of a trip to Alaska. While on a morning charter outing, the first fish hit a squid-jig down about 40 feet and the rod began pumping up and down as I tried to begin reeling in the fish.
The next thing I knew a second rod pumped up and down, which my son, Shawn Eisele, of Juneau, Alaska, took up and began reeling in. As we gained line, each reel, in turn, squealed as each fish pulled line against the drag. We eventually began gaining line back on the reel.

Wisconsin DNR working with marketing firm to promote Great Lakes sport, commercial fishing

The  Wisconsin DNR is working with a marketing firm to promote sport and commercial fishing on the Great Lakes.
Brad Eggold, DNR Great Lakes fisheries supervisor, told the Natural Resources Board (NRB), at its Aug. 9 meeting that the DNR is working on promotional campaigns to encourage people to fish the Great Lakes and to buy commercially caught fish.
“You’ll see some of the ads on billboards and on Facebook, trying to guide people to fish the Great Lakes and enjoy the fish caught by commercial fishermen,” Eggold said.

Wisconsin couple helps local governments develop ordinances to control wake boats

Wake surfing has become a scourge on many Wisconsin lakes, and Richard and Carol Phillips are trying to help local communities prepare for the onslaught of the big boats and havoc from waves they create.
Richard Phillips, 68, a retired lawyer and Carol Phillips, 67, a retired civil engineer, of Presque Isle in Vilas County, are concerned about the growing threat of the new boats that put out unusually big waves.

Report says Wisconsin DNR management of Crex Meadows Wildlife Area not causing high water issues

Citizens living west of Crex Meadows Wildlife Area near Grantsburg, Wis., in Burnett County have often complained to the Natural Resources Board (NRB) about high water flooding their land, but a new report indicates that the high water is a natural phenomenon and not caused by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) management actions.

Wisconsin wolf season rules paralleling new plan

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board’s (NRB) Aug. 9 meeting was loaded with informational items ranging from DNR budgets to wolves.
Scott Karel, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wildlife regulation policy specialist, gave a brief summary of the proposed timber wolf harvest regulations as a spin-off from the recently released state wolf management plan. The final regulations will be presented to the NRB in October, when action also is expected by the board on the updated state wolf management plan.
Paul Neumann, DNR management and budget section chief, told the board that the new 2023-25 DNR budget totals $1.22 billion for the two-year period, which is a 7.5% increase over the previous biennium.

Wisconsin budget carries license fee hikes for nonresidents

Nonresidents will pay more for hunting and fishing licenses now that Wisconsin’s new 2023-25 state budget is in effect.

Residents will see no increase in license costs, but hunters, trappers, and anglers also will see few new major programs in the Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) new budget despite the anticipated increase in license dollars from the nonresident fee increase.
The nonresident deer hunting license went from $160 to $200. Nonresidents also pay a $2 wildlife damage surcharge and a 75-cent issuing fee.

Land swap gains more public access for Wisconsin outdoor users

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) approved the exchange of land parcels that will result in an additional 127 acres of land open to the public.
What looks like a win-win for hunters, trappers, and anglers was an exchange of 272 state-owned acres, where hunting was restricted due to an urban proximity, for 399 acres on seven properties in three counties offering additional recreational opportunities.

Retired biologists say don’t expect change to Wisconsin’s pheasant scene without large-scale effort to create more grasslands

Three retired wildlife biologists with strong ties to Wisconsin’s pheasant scene agree it’s going to take a large-scale effort to build the type of “grassy” habitat needed to support a naturally reproducing pheasant population.
Doing so isn’t impossible, but would take the combined efforts of multiple agencies, including the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), conservation groups, the farming community and individual citizens, they say.
