Minnesota’s Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council approves $160 million for projects

With a few clarifications and deletions from the list of projects – whose initial asking price tag hit around $403 million – the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council approved approximately $160 million for about 50 projects for fiscal year 2026.
“This is the greatest gift we ever gave ourselves, to be able to do this. Because a lot of states have things they’d like to do but they don’t have the money,” LSOHC Vice Chair Ron Schara said of this year’s available funding.

Bass anglers assist after plane crash on Minnesota’s Inguadona Lake

As Ramsey resident Vern Wagner and New Brighton resident Jeffrey Nelson were spending the afternoon of Tuesday, Oct. 8 casting lines on Minnesota’s Inguadona Lake, they weren’t expecting to see a plane crash into the lake.
“We saw this huge splash – water went like 30 feet into the air. And we reeled up and roared down to the end of the lake,” Wagner said.
Inguadona is a 1,133-acre water body located just east of Longville in Cass County.

‘Prevailing wage’ law to affect conservation work in Minnesota

After “prevailing wage” law changes took effect Aug. 1, 2024, outdoors organizations and the Minnesota DNR, both which sometimes oversee state-funded conservation projects, still wondered how the law would affect workers’ wages – and project budgets.
In short, the law’s change more explicitly outlines “public works projects,” as “improvement or restoration of … land intended for use by the public for the public benefit.” The change likely will affect organizations that receive funding from the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council, or the state in general, because many of those projects aim to improve land for public benefit or use.

Less junk than anticipated found during Mille Lacs cleanup in Minnesota

As a third-generation Mille Lacs cabin owner, she started locally, connecting with the Lake of the Woods’ Keep It Clean coalition. After working alongside that group to get the Keep It Clean legislation signed into state law – which prohibits waste disposal on or under lake ice – she wondered again what else could be done.

Hunter walking trails get a facelift in northern Minnesota

As Scott Johnson drove to his desired ruffed grouse-hunting spot on Minnesota’s season opener in mid-September, he felt a pang of pride as he passed parked cars at area hunter walking trail trailheads.
“It’s great. It’s very rewarding when people are using these and hopefully, probably appreciating them,” said Johnson, who is the Ruffed Grouse Society’s forest conservation coordinator in Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin.
The sense of accomplishment surfaced in that moment because the RGS and local entities in northern Minnesota had spent the past few years upgrading and restoring the hunter walking trails.

Minnesota DNR conservation officer James Fogarty receives national award

After being nominated by his supervisors, Minnesota DNR Conservation Officer James Fogarty said he felt honored to receive the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators’ Northern Region Officer of the Year award.
Little did he know that there was more to come.
“There are a lot of really qualified, other great people that are out there, and my thought process is, well I’m the one who is taking this, but really we all deserve it,” said Fogarty, a CO in the Twin Cities west-metro District 13.

Minnesota waters inventory update to start, wrap up in eight years

Minnesota DNR officials intend to answer Minnesotans’ questions and explain an upcoming eight-year public waters inventory project in early October, before the undertaking kicks off in 2025.
“We do feel that this effort, although very large, will provide better water resource protection, better regulatory clarity, and a shared understanding for everybody involved,” said Randall Doneen, the DNR’s section manager of conservation assistance and regulation for the Ecological and Water Resources Division.

Increased participation in Minnesota hunter observation survey helps DNR’s deer management

The Minnesota DNR has released its 2022 Minnesota Deer Hunter Observation Project Report, which shows a drastic increase in hunter participation from around the state, reinvigorating the value of the survey, officials say.
“This is designed to kind of be an annual thing that we do to help us with deer management. The goal is that this becomes a reliable index of the population that we can use, and I think we’re headed that way,” said Eric Michel, a DNR ungulate research scientist.

Minnesota’s bear harvest near 3,200 at the midway point

As bear-hunting season hits its halfway mark, the Minnesota DNR’s preliminary harvest total as of Monday stood at about 3,200 bears.
“But the pace has significantly slowed down, as far as harvest registration goes. We had in the first seven days about 2,500 bears, and over the last seven days, less than 200 bears registered,” said Dan Stark, the DNR’s large carnivore specialist.
