Fall turkey season kicks off Saturday in Minnesota

On the spurs of a record-breaking spring turkey harvest in Minnesota, the fall turkey season promises a return to a business-as-usual pace. The autumn kill usually hovers around a bit less than 1,300 birds.
“We don’t sell tons and tons of fall hunting licenses. … A lot of people, I think, put them in their back pockets in case they see turkeys while they’re deer hunting,” said Nate Huck, the Minnesota DNR’s resident game bird specialist.

Legacy of USA Clay Target League founder Jim Sable lives on after his death at age 85

Jim Sable, the man who reshaped the future of gun clubs around the country by making the sport more accessible to youth through the USA Clay Target League, died Sunday, Sept. 22, at the age of 85. Sable was the 2019 Outdoor News Person of the Year.
“Jim was a visionary … and to see both of our wheels turning at the same time to see what this organization was going to be like – not only in its early days, but what we [were] going to do in our later days,” said John Nelson, current president of the USA Clay Target League and long-time friend of Sable.

Minnesota hunter finds herself in between a sow and its cub… 20 feet up a tree

Sitting on a treestand near Duluth in mid-September, Samantha Ewald finally saw what she had been waiting to see emerge from the brush behind her – a bear.
“I stayed very still. … It actually sniffed around my tree a lot and then kind of was like sniffing up in the air. I was getting ready in case I was going to get a good shot on it,” Ewald said.
She waited and watched from her perch about 20 feet above the ground as the bear fiddled with the bait less than 100 feet away.
“It was taking its sweet time getting there,” she said.

Hatchlings of aging bigmouth buffalo floundering in Minnesota’s Rice Lake

For many years, Sam Seybold, buffer specialist with the Aitkin County Soil and Water Conservation District, spear-fished for bigmouth buffalo in Minnesota’s Rice Lake.
“I noticed that the number (of bigmouth buffalo) seemed to be less and less, and I’d never see any young ones, small ones, or anything. I noticed that would be something that was somewhat concerning,” Seybold said.
He reached out to Dr. Alec Lackmann, an ichthyologist (fish researcher) with the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Swenson College of Science and Engineering, who previously had studied bigmouth buffalo.

Public meeting start of “digging in” to learn more about Minnesota’s elk

With a research project involving Minnesota’s northwestern elk herds and the reintroduction of elk in the northeast looming, the Minnesota DNR last week hosted a public meeting about all things elk.
“This was just the first of many upcoming public meetings. … We’re going to be really digging in more to some of these issues we’re having, particularly with depredation issues and how to look for solutions,” said Kelsie LaSharr, the DNR elk coordinator.

Minnesota archers set to learn (non) winter’s effects on whitetails

As Minnesota kicked off its first archery season allowing crossbow use for all last year, it didn’t lead to an increased harvest – a concern of some leading up to the season.
“I’ve been looking at several things based on harvest – archery harvest, crossbow harvest – and there isn’t really anything that drastically stands out just as a result of crossbow harvest,” said Todd Froberg, DNR big-game program coordinator.
However, last season’s deer harvest was lower overall than recent years, hovering around 160,000 with about 24,000 harvested by archers making it a less-than-ideal year to set a baseline for crossbow usage, he said.

Tribal moose hunts imminent in Northeast Minnesota

As moose-hunting season draws closer for the Bois Forte, Fond du Lac, and Grand Portage Ojibwe bands in mid- to late-September, harvest limits on moose may range from six to 30 across northeast Minnesota reservations.

The moose-hunting season for the bands is likely to be another average one, with enough permits for those who are interested in the opportunity to kill a moose this season. The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe offered 70 permits to members this season, capping harvest at 30 bull moose.

With limited natural food, Minnesota’s bear hunt off to hot start

Wil Goetsch caught a glimpse of the big bear on his trail cameras twice before seeing him emerge through rows of corn as he sat perched in his hunting stand.
“He came in upwind of me, to the north, and fixated right up on me in the stand, smelled for me. You could see him processing,” Goetsch said.
Goetsch, his bow drawn, let an arrow fly, hitting the bear.
“It wasn’t until I shot him that I realized how big he was.”
