Will 2025 bring answers as to what will fill void of transferred Upper Sioux Agency State Park in Minnesota?

In February 2024, Upper Sioux Agency State Park closed to the public and park ownership officially was transferred without cost to the Upper Sioux Community by the Minnesota DNR, per legislative directive.
Within the approved legislation, the DNR was granted around $5 million to buy either new land for a future park or fund other regional outdoor recreation opportunities – replacement options.

Cedar Lake in Minnesota’s Rice County gives up another record-breaking crappie

In late October, Axel Angelow reeled in a record-breaking black crappie from Cedar Lake in Rice County, Minn.
It was an 18-inch, 3-pound, 13-ounce fish that broke the previous certified-weight record by 4 ounces. Angelow’s catch dethrones the previous record, which was caught from Cedar Lake, too, on May 9, 2024.

With budget surplus expected, Minnesota’s Outdoor Heritage Fund has extra $7 million

Based on the November state forecast budget, the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council will end the year with more money to distribute than anticipated.
The council will receive an additional $7.06 million, which will be disbursed to various projects that were approved earlier in the year. That addition will bring the council’s spending power to about $168 million for its project recommendations.

Should ball fields and splash pads qualify for state funding for the outdoors? Decision reached in Minnesota

Following debate that stretched through two meetings in November and December, the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Natural Resources in Minnesota found common ground on whether baseball fields or splash pads qualify for funding for the outdoors.
In short, those kinds of projects – by themselves, stand-alones – won’t qualify for Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund dollars, the proceeds of lottery sales. However, the compromise commission members agreed upon, prior to approval on Wednesday, Dec. 11, is to fund environment-enhancing aspects of baseball fields, basketball courts, splash pads, or playground equipment projects.

Early ice on Mississippi sidetracks capture of Asian carp in Minnesota, Wisconsin

Unlike a year ago, when the Minnesota and Wisconsin DNRs caught the most Asian carp in one attempt on the Mississippi River than ever before in state history, this season’s carp capture effort wasn’t as productive.
While the Asian carp field team had planned to go onto the Mississippi River near and south of Winona, Minn., throughout early and mid-December, early ice foiled those plans thanks to unsafe conditions.

Researchers investigating earlier bear reproduction in Minnesota

Each winter, Andy Tri and his team cautiously approach bear den after bear den, where a DNR-collared bear is hunkering to make it through a Minnesota winter.
Tri, the DNR’s bear project leader, and other researchers start by covering the opening of the den with a cloth and sneaking a syringe full of anesthetic into the den until it finds its mark. After a bear’s been injected, the clock starts ticking for the researchers to collect all the desired data before she awakes from her slumber.
“This is, I think, year 41 we’ve been doing this, so we’re pretty well oiled,” Tri said.

There were 48 total CWD-positive deer identified a year ago.

Minnesota DNR says no changes to current goose management

After Canada goose populations in Minnesota peaked at the turn of the century, the Minnesota DNR shifted management to reduce the population across the state. Following that change in management approach, the Canada goose population has hovered around 134,000 for the past 10 years – a number that doesn’t alarm the agency.

With the Minnesota House evenly split, what will legislative session bring for the outdoors?

With an even split down the aisle in the Minnesota House of Representatives, with 67 Republican and 67 DFL representatives, all the committees will be led by bipartisan co-chairs for the 2025-26 session.
The House Legacy Finance Committee also saw a shakeup with Rep. Joe McDonald, R-Delano, and Rep. Samantha Vang, DFL-Brooklyn Center, taking over the co-chair leadership roles. Previously in those roles, Rep. Leon Lille, DFL-North St. Paul, was the chair alongside co-chair Rep. Samakab Hussein, DFL-St. Paul.
