New York’s turkey hunters battle some wet conditions to bag their birds

While some areas of New York remained dry to the point where wildfires continued to be a risk this spring, rainy weather has plagued many parts of the state as of late, and surely played a role during the state’s annual youth turkey hunting weekend, as well as the first week of the spring gobbler season.
The regular turkey hunting season began May 1, and for many hunters their first outings were Saturday and Sunday, May 3-4. Once again, wet weather greeted hunters, especially in eastern and northern New York.

Member of popular grizzly bear family hit and killed in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park

A 5-year-old bear that was a member of a well-known grizzly family in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park died after it was hit by a vehicle, the same fate that befell his mother late last year, wildlife officials said Tuesday.
Park rangers found the body of the male bear, known as Grizzly No. 1058, about 125 yards (114 meters) from Highway 26 near the Buffalo Fork River on Tuesday. The bear was one of four cubs that emerged in May 2020 with their mother, Grizzly No. 399, who was often called the world’s most famous grizzly bear.

Off-colored turkeys caught on camera in central Minnesota

Responding to a recent story in Outdoor News about an odd-colored turkey caught on camera in the Grey Eagle area, reader Doug Wonders, of Motley, sent us a couple of photos he’s captured on trail camera of similarly unique birds – a tom from several years ago and a hen from this year.
The image of the tom was captured in 2014, and Wonders said that bird “was around for the summer and fall months and then disappeared.”

Minnesota’s opener features some of the year’s best fishing for multiple species

The Minnesota fishing opener arrives this Saturday, May 10, and if you haven’t heard, it’s kind of a big deal. In terms of participation, there’s no other state in the Midwest that compares. Anglers come from across the country to partake in the annual occasion.
To many, it’s about much more than just the fishing. It’s a tradition. In terms of popularity, the top destinations are primarily walleye-centric bodies of water such as Lake Mille Lacs, Leech Lake, Red Lake, Lake Winnibigoshish, and a number of others.

Pinpointing what led to a great week in the turkey woods

It was hard to believe we weren’t hearing anything on the final morning of Minnesota’s first turkey-hunting season this year.
Where were the gobbles? This was in stark contrast to the two mornings I drove to the property to listen for roosted birds leading up to the hunt. Toms were abundant – and vocal – those days.

Pennsylvania Game Commission has high hopes for gobbler season harvest

That might be tough to beat this year, especially because the statewide flock contains a lot of three-year-old and older gobblers, the toughest kind to fool. But Casalena is excited and thinks the rest of the state’s 170,000 or so turkey hunters should be, too.
