Michigan groups angry that dog quota not raised for bear training season

Misconceptions about bear hunting contributed to the Michigan Natural Resources Commission’s rejection of a dog training proposal in April, but hound hunters aren’t giving up.
The NRC voted 3-3 in April on a compromise proposal aimed at expanding opportunities for hound hunters to train young dogs during the bear training season, effectively killing the measure. The compromise stemmed from a proposal in February to expand the current eight dog limit to 10 during the training season that raised concerns with Department of Natural Resources law enforcement.

Here’s how to catch smallmouth on the fly in northeast Ohio tributary streams

As the steelhead season comes to a close, many Ohio anglers across the Lake Erie tributaries put their gear away until the fall.
But, over the past few years a growing cohort of fly anglers keep their gear out and target lake-run smallmouth bass throughout the spring. Fishing the same Lake Erie tributaries known for steelhead, smallmouth begin to migrate upstream to spawn.

Michigan DNR does not recommend change to woodcock opening day

In 2001, federal wildlife officials changed the framework for woodcock hunting, shortening the season from 60 days to 45 days and mandating that the Michigan season open no sooner than the Saturday closest to Sept. 22. Previously, woodcock season opened when most of the other small game seasons – rabbit, squirrel and ruffed grouse – opened on Sept. 15.
Many grouse hunters were unhappy with the woodcock season opening later than grouse because both birds are often found in the same habitat and are generally hunted at the same time.

Landowner conservation assistance could take hit in Trump proposal for the NRCS

Navigating government programs has never been for the faint of heart, nor has it been something citizens have dared wade into alone, should some form of assistance be available.
That’s true of conservation programs, too. And it’s why conservation groups in general and Pheasants Forever in particular expressed concern earlier this month when President Donald Trump released a budget outline for the fiscal year (2026) that begins Oct. 1. Per a May 2 PF press release, “The so-called ‘skinny budget’ would reduce the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s budget by more than 18% from existing levels. As part of those cuts, conservation technical assistance at the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) would be slashed by $754 million.”
