Fishing derbies that serve as fundraisers are rebounding in New York this winter

A year ago, J.W. Halchak, organizer of the annual ice fishing tournament on Morningside Lake, in Sullivan County, N.Y., had to make the difficult decision to cancel the tournament because of a lack of ice. The winter of 2023-24 was the latest in a number of years of spotty ice fishing conditions around the Northeast.
The annual Hurleyville Fire Department/Fallsburg Youth Commission Ice Fishing Tournament is a fundraiser for the two organizations, drawing 300 or so people to fish each January, Halchak said.

Jeremy Smith: Time to take a pinpointed approach to managing forward-facing sonar

Technology and the fishing industry go hand in hand. With every season, new concepts hit the market, hoping to make their mark. Perhaps the most impactful innovation of the past decade lies in the electronics arena – specifically in live- or so-called forward-facing sonar.
There’s no question it’s the most powerful tool to ever hit fishing. Not only does it help anglers find fish, but the information gleaned from such technology is far beyond what many thought possible. Along with power comes controversy. There’s never been a more controversial fishing product to reach the masses.

Another bill aims to end Minnesota’s shotgun zone for deer, this time giving counties the chance to decide

The Minnesota Senate is considering eliminating the state’s shotgun zone again this year, but it’s seeking that change in a different manner than that of last year’s bill, which fell apart as legislators sought certain county exemptions.
The 2025 version of the bill, S.F. 107, authored by Sen. Steve Drazkowski, R-Mazeppa, would eliminate the shotgun zone requirement but give counties the opportunity to make the decision for themselves. Through county-level decision making, each county board would take public comment and determine the best option for their areas.
