Process your own venison and reap the rewards

The 8-point buck – a handsome specimen of a white-tailed deer – tapped out about 50 yards to my front in a cut alfalfa field.
With about 15 minutes of shooting time left on opening day several years ago at deer camp in north-central Minnesota, I’d placed one round from my trusty .243 into the unsuspecting animal’s boiler room. It dropped nearly where it had stood – a textbook clean kill. Truth is, a novice could have made that shot. About 20 minutes later, gutting gloves up to my elbows, day tiptoeing ever closer to night, I began field-dressing my deer when a good friend chimed in.

Commentary: Report shows scavenging swine could spread CWD

Feral hogs – anywhere, anytime – are bad news. They destroy crops, prey on fawns, destroy nests, and in their spare time, spread a variety of diseases, including African swine fever and pseudorabies.
Feral hogs are prolific and can have two litters a year. Each is large and, as an old friend used to say, in a litter of 10, 11 survive. Now, a publication in the journal Emerging Infectious Disease reports that: “scavenging swine could play a role in disseminating CWD and could therefore influence its epidemiology, geographic distribution, and interspecies spread.”

More than 1,500 pelts changed hands at Ohio fur auction

As Ohio State Trappers Association (OSTA) fur auction coordinator Shawn Bentley drove though the heavy snowfall in Butler County, he wondered if he should have canceled the first sale of the season in the name of safety and attendance.
However, it was a good thing that the Bucyrus auction proceeded as planned, as about 20 sellers who braved the roads offered their lots of fur to five to six buyers as OSTA volunteers helped to run the event as smoothly as ever.

Commentary: Pennsylvania columnist was all wrong about the value of invasive plants!

Well, now I’ve seen it all … an outdoor writer defending invasive plants. Boy, does Tom Venesky’s recent column miss the mark on invasive plants as wildlife habitat. The answer from any outdoor writer worth his salt should not only be “no,” but “hell no!”
Venesky provides anecdotal information about some of his favorite hunting spots being “better” because of multiflora rose or autumn olive thickets but totally ignores the fact there are thousands of acres of habitat that are impenetrable because of these plants.
