Moose, mountain lions top multiple unusual wildlife sightings in south-central Minnesota this fall

Stein Innvaer, a Minnesota DNR wildlife manager in Nicollet, reports a spate of unusual wildlife sightings in the south-central portion of the state.
Mountain lions, a bear, and a moose? All have made surprise visits to the area this fall.
“It’s been the week for cougar reports,” Innvaer said in an interview with Outdoor News on Friday, Oct. 13. “I’ve been involved with taking reports of one over here in north Mankato caught on a house camera. Really good video and obviously a mountain lion.”

Minnesota’s firearms deer forecast: Many factors will affect how hunters fare

How will hunters fare during the 2023 Minnesota firearms deer season? It seems like as much as any time in recent memory, the answer to that question may depend on where you hunt.
Parts of northern Minnesota are coming off a second straight severe winter that has managers concerned about overall deer numbers in multiple deer permit areas. On the opposite end of the spectrum are the 300 and 600 series DPAs in southeastern Minnesota. Hunters again have opportunities to shoot more than one deer almost across the board in the southeast.

Pennsylvania Game Commission barking up right tree with hunting dog proposal

No one wants to be disturbed while hunting, whether it’s by other people, vehicles, ATVS or dogs.
A move by the Pennsylvania Game Commission board to address the latter makes sense. During the September meeting, the board granted preliminary approval to prohibit the hunting of any furbearer through use of a dog during the overlap of any regular deer season or regular bear season.

Minnesota DNR places transmitters to better understand blue suckers and gar

Blue suckers and longnose gar are native fish and not as popular as game fish like walleyes, northern pike, and bass, but the two species are important to the many rivers in Minnesota.
As part of a research effort, Joel Stiras, the Minnesota DNR’s large river specialist, traveled to the St. Croix River on Oct. 2 to place transmitters in blue suckers and gar. The transmitters will allow Stiras and the DNR to monitor their movement and understand where the fish consistently swim in the river.
