Crappies off the bottom: For fall fishing, let your sonar be your guide

I sipped my hot tea and stared at the inexpensive sonar bracketed to the stern. One hand was on the 12-volt tiller but I wasn’t touching a rod.
My partner had his line in the water, a jig with a 2-inch bio-plastic minnow. My favorite light jigging rod was lying untouched in the boat’s corner because I wasn’t feeling it yet. Neither, I thought, were the crappies.

Kalamazoo River still producing despite a long list of setbacks

In the 20 years I’ve been fishing the Kalamazoo River below Morrow Dam, I’d never seen the water as low as this year when I was on the stream recently.
My host, Scott Markham, who keeps his eye on what’s going on with the river, said it had something to do with maintaining the elevation of the upstream pond, and despite recent rains, the flow from the dam was being restricted. I hope someone is keeping an eye on that dam. A couple of years ago, when the dam was being repaired, the operators botched the job and allowed about 10 million truckloads of sediment to wash downstream. It was a horrible mess and you can still see the effects.

Oxbow Bottoms Wildlife Area a new opportunity for hunters in Iowa

Bordered by the Iowa River to the east and U.S. Hwy. 30 to the north is one of the newest public areas in central Iowa — the 260-acre Oxbow Bottoms Wildlife Area — a floodplain grassland-wetland complex in Tama County.
Because of its high visibility, it will likely become one of the more popular places to hunt. But it’s not there yet.
“It’s so new, I haven’t been getting many calls about it,” said Steve Woodruff, wildlife biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Iowa River Unit.
