Steve Carney: For Missouri River’s spring walleyes, think small jigs

My first fishing trip to the Missouri River in central South Dakota was a successful one, with two days of magnificent weather. Highs both days were in the 70s, and there was no wind. I couldn’t ask for a better trip.
I spent the first three hours fishing deep-water spots that I’d fished last season, but initially struck out. The guests with whom I was fishing were giving me the “look,” and I didn’t blame them. It all changed later in the afternoon.

On river systems: Control your boat, catch fish

Anglers are taking advantage of the early spring-like weather, with many of them now fishing the variety of fish available in river systems in the Midwest. Some anglers tend to be wary of fishing river systems because of the current, which can be intimidating.
Here are some tips that should help you become more successful as the river-systems fish bite heats up.

Steve Carney: Invest time now on your ice-fishing gear to eliminate headaches next season

After a challenging ice-fishing season, it’s time to retire the ice gear for the season. Many ice anglers just throw their ice gear into a corner in a garage or other storage, only to find next fall that they’ve created a real mess.
Here are some tips for properly stowing your valuable ice gear.

Steve Carney: An ice season recap, and a word on the Winter Severity Index

What a weird ice-fishing season this year!
The season has to go down as the strangest that I can remember. It started out just fine, but as the season progressed, ice conditions kept a lot of anglers off the ice. We never rebounded after a cold stretch in late January, and the ice never was the same.

Steve Carney: Sometimes, being shallow (when ice fishing) is a good thing

I’ve made it my mission this winter to do most of my crappie and bluegill fishing in shallow water – anywhere from 5 to 7 feet. I’ve had some slow days and some excellent days and have found that shallow-water fishing requires effort to locate the perfect spot.

Steve Carney: Lever-action rifles stand the test of time

Lever-action rifles have always had a special place in my heart, probably because of my exposure to cowboy shows during my childhood.
Lever-action rifles have become so popular of late that they can be hard to find. You can thank the TV series “Yellowstone” for that.
Here are my thoughts on the lever-action rifle – a firearm that will never go away.

Steve Carney: Poor ice conditions disrupt potential great second half to ice-fishing season in Minnesota

It’s hard to believe ice conditions are regressing so early, so quickly. But that’s what we get with extremely warm weather in January and now February. The recent warm stretch was probably the longest I’ve experienced in late January and early February, and it really has disrupted what potentially appeared to be a great second half of the ice-fishing season.
