Steve Carney: An unexpected lighting system success for the duck boat

I finally found time to enhance my duck boat lighting system, but it was a real chore. I started with some UTV light bars, and it took me several hours to attach them with a 2X4 board. Then, after a morning duck hunt, I found myself disappointed in the range of the beam.
The light bar was rated at 7,800 lumens, which is a measurement on the power of the unit. I removed the bars and came up with a better solution using items I had in my garage.

Steve Carney: A Minnesota duck update, and a bad experience in the deer blind

I recently spent an afternoon in a ground blind I set up last August. I was anticipating some deer-hunting action on this perfect late afternoon.
After an hour or so in the blind, I heard some sporadic rifle shots to my north. It didn’t sound like target practice, but rather someone probably hunting squirrels or rabbits. The sixth shot I heard came right over my ground blind, and I heard the leaves above me scatter.

Steve Carney: The great doe stare-down, and a pulley assist for the truck bed

I hated the ladder stand the minute I climbed into it. It’s a double-wide, two-person stand that’s on a single tree. The bottom line: I was uncomfortable because I looked like a human billboard.
And then it happened. A huge doe stepped out of the poplars at 225 yards and busted me right away. She looked left and started toward me from at least two football fields away.

Mid-October bowhunts: Morning or evening?

The early bow season has started out fairly well with lots of deer on the move. I’ve suffered through some really hot evenings on stand, but now the weather has turned, which means more deer movement and some pre-rut activity is on the way.
But do I hunt during the morning or evening? This is an interesting question, often debated among archers. Some of them hunt mornings only because of work conflicts, while others prefer evenings.

Steve Carney: Minnesota duck season begins with a whimper, and some early archery success

My second hunt location this season was on a private slough in the heart of so-called duck country in the northwest, and the results were the same: poor. This beautiful slough was not hunted on opening weekend, so we assumed there would be a buildup of birds when we arrived.

Steve Carney: Ways to beat the heat during early archery deer sits, and a turkey vulture assist

The early bow season in Minnesota brought with it a real “sweat-fest.” The cooler weather for deer hunting has been welcome.
The challenge of toughing out 80-degree evening sits can be real early in the deer season. Here are some thoughts on staying somewhat cool.

Steve Carney: With the Ned rig, like all baits, there’s some good, some bad

When you hang around a group of bass anglers, the talk frequently turns to the Ned rig. I often have clients who ask to fish the rig, but I must tell them that I have not exactly fallen in love with this style of bait. I’ve had good days and bad days with it.
At first glance, the Ned rig looks almost comical and, honestly, too simple. But there is a time and place for this bait.
