Steve Carney: Are electric fillet knives worth the money?

I remember my first electric fillet knife from years ago. I was frustrated when using it from the start. Electric knives back then had to be plugged in, and most of the time there wasn’t an outlet nearby. So I gave up on the electric knives.
Since that first experience, my trusty “manual” fillet knife had been working just fine. But recently I field-tested several brands of electric fillet knives, and I’ve been impressed by how far they’ve come.

Steve Carney: For quick, consistent way to cook ducks, try the spatchcock method of cooking

A year ago, I started cooking waterfowl using the “spatchcock” style of cooking. This style involves cooking the birds in a flat manner – not the traditional whole-bird method. Spatchcock cooking was used in the 18th century and is of Irish origin.

Steve Carney: Looking back on a strange 2023 bowhunting season for whitetails

What a strange 2023 bowhunting season it was for this hunter!

So far, the early ice-fishing season has featured clear ice and no snow cover. Warm temps have hindered ice making in some areas, but it looks like the clear-ice scenario will really take off now if immediate weather forecasts are correct.
Here are some strategies for angling successfully on ice given such clear-ice conditions.

Steve Carney: What was behind a disappointing Minnesota duck hunting season?

The 2023 waterfowling season mercifully came to an end last weekend.
This season rates as one of the toughest I have ever experienced, and I worked about as hard as possible to harvest the ducks I did. The final few weeks, I have heard various theories about the 2023 season. Like, “The ducks already have moved through the state,” or, “There are tons of ducks still in Canada.” It’s hard to know what to believe.
