Although it may not have moved yet beyond the American southwest, Pennsylvania officials are taking measures to protect against a new and potentially devastating threat to livestock and wildlife – the flesh-eating new world screwworm (NWS).
While federal agriculture officials work to contain a growing outbreak in Texas and New Mexico, Pennsylvania agriculture secretary Russell Redding ordered a quarantine June 9 to try to keep the potentially deadly parasite from wreaking havoc here.
