Wisconsin DNR continues to investigate swan, heron shootings

An investigation continues into the illegal shooting of three swans and a great blue heron at a state wildlife area in Shawano County.
Clark Delzer, a DNR conservation warden based in Shawano, is leading the investigation of the shootings, which were reported in late August at the Navarino Wildlife Area.
“We’re still working leads, still working on the investigation,” he told Wisconsin Outdoor News Sept. 15. “There’s not a lot that we can really disclose, as it is a pending investigation.”

Sporting clay shooters take aim during Wisconsin’s state meet

Evan Guttormson and Ben Klein didn’t know each other heading into the state sporting clays shoot, but they had at least one thing in common – they joined more than 350 other shotgunners at the Wisconsin Sporting Clay Association’s annual state meet, Aug. 2-6 – this year at J&H Game Farm near Navarino.

Man gets 5 years for role in huge Wisconsin poaching case from Waupaca County

A Fox Valley man will spend five years in prison for his role in a Waupaca County deer poaching case that authorities said is one of Wisconsin’s largest in recent memory.
Meanwhile, the other defendant in the case remains free in Texas after failing to show up for a Wisconsin court hearing. Eric A. Feavel, 41, of Menasha, pleaded guilty Aug. 10 in Waupaca County Circuit Court to three felony counts of bail jumping and three misdemeanor counts of illegal shining of deer. Waupaca County Circuit Court Judge Troy Nielsen also permanently revoked Feavel’s hunting privileges and fined him $1,000, plus court costs, on each of the three shining charges.

Wisconsin author, Bob Allen, introduces kids to fishing

A passion for fishing has led to a new career for Bob Allen.
The Brookfield, Wis., resident has self-published five children’s books in the last five years about fishing and had a booth June 17 at St. Croix Rods’ annual customer appreciation day in Park Falls.
“I’m retired and my wife said, ‘You need a project,’” Allen said. “I said, ‘Well, I wrote a little bit in high school’ and she told me to write about something I know. I coached hockey for 35 years, but I’ve been fishing for 70 years. I said, ‘I’m going to write about fishing.’”

The best rods on earth.
It’s a bold marketing statement, but a Wisconsin-based company believes it has the goods to back up the claim.
“We’ve felt that we’ve earned that right over the years,” Jesse Simpkins, St. Croix Rods’ vice president of marketing, said June 17 at the company’s annual customer appreciation day at its headquarters in Park Falls.

Sturgeon make annual splash along Wisconsin’s Wolf River

The Wolf River walleyes had to wait a little bit this spring.
Doug Peterman and Doug Schramm drove two hours from their Sheboygan County homes in mid-April to take advantage of the Wolf River’s walleye run. They found an open dock on the river a few miles west of New London and settled in for a few hours of fishing.
That didn’t last long, as several lake sturgeon – some of them more than 6 feet long – swam under the dock. Peterman and Schramm set their fishing rods down and peered into the river as the sturgeon continued upstream on their annual spawning run.
