Trout brings anglers to northeastern Wisconsin

The kids showed up in northeastern Wisconsin and the area’s streams and trout cooperated.
Several families headed to Fireman’s Park in the northern Oconto County community of Mountain May 6 for the first day of Wisconsin’s inland fishing season.
While others headed to their favorite trout stream or launched their boat in a lake in search of walleyes, the park’s small pond off Hwy. 32 also received its share of anglers.

Ample CWD chatter at Wisconsin’s Waupaca County meeting

It wasn’t an action item on the agenda, but chronic wasting disease (CWD) generated plenty of discussion May 2 at Waupaca County’s Deer Advisory Council meeting in Manawa.
The council met to recommend deer management goals for the county’s 2023 hunting seasons to the DNR. The council’s recommendations include setting an antlerless quota of 8,550 deer, offering three Farmland Zone permits per license, making 2,500 private land and 500 public land bonus antlerless permits available, and holding a holiday hunt, which will run Dec. 24 until Jan. 1, 2024.

Top muskie anglers share their knowledge during Wisconsin event in Stevens Point

He didn’t know it then, but one fish changed Josh Teigen’s life.
That fish? A 42-inch muskie he caught as a 7-year-old while fishing with his dad near his home in Bayfield County, Wis.
Teigen, now a fishing guide, turned up at Stevens Point’s Fleet Farm April 20 as part of the store’s Musky Days.
“We were fishing on the Pike Lake Chain, which is where I grew up in Iron River,” he said. “I caught the 42-incher on a Suick. I remember that fish T-boning it right by the boat. That’s what got me hooked.”

Turning decoys into works of art

Bill Koelpin, Jr., didn’t have to look hard to find a little artistic inspiration. All he had to do was ask his father, Bill Sr.
“My father was a world-champion carver, painter, and bronze sculptor,” Koelpin said while standing next to his artwork at the Wisconsin Decoy and Sporting Collectibles Show, held March 10-11 in Oshkosh. “He started as a duck carver, then he went into painting, and he’s well-known for his prints.”
