Commentary: Fishing Expo in Ohio a chance to mingle with like-minded anglers

When February rolls into Columbus, Ohio, so does the National Fishing Expo. Buck-eye State anglers descend upon the Bricker Building on the Ohio State Fairgrounds in search of great deals on everything from baits to boats.
My role in this piscatorial pilgrimage is manning the Ohio Outdoor News booth to procure new subscribers and accept extended subscriptions from our readers.

Ohio Division of Wildlife launches new ‘Fishing Tournament System’

“We do have a story we’d like to share with the public, now that you ask.”
That comment originated from a question cast at Scott Hale during the annual Division of Wildlife’s dinner held at the governor’s residence in September. Hale is the executive administrator of fish management and research at the Division of Wildlife (DOW) in the Ohio DNR (ODNR). The topic Hale had in mind concerned the newly formed Fishing Tournament System (FTS) now in operation for all tournaments being conducted at ODNR ramps and lakes.

Commentary: Women in the fishing world a worthy cause to pursue

From community youth fishing events to statewide junior bass fishing tournaments to Hooked On Fishing, Not On Drugs events to Pathways to Fishing programs, there is no shortage of efforts to introduce young people to sport fishing.
However, an experience I had on a recent fishing trip to Lake Erie opened my eyes to an introductory angling avenue that should be seeing more traffic.

Junior anglers from Ohio make it a summer’s worth of titles

Most weekend tournament anglers compete for a lifetime without taking home a state or national title.
However, two friends joined the Perry County Junior Renegades club this spring and collected not just one, but three titles versus the best young anglers across Ohio and the nation before summer ever reached August. The two boys attend different schools, but share a love for bass fishing that has resulted in an unforgettable summer.

Former junior anglers from Ohio on different, successful paths

In late June, two young men from Ohio competed in different bass tournaments sponsored by the same organization on the same lake in New York. One was fishing a professional circuit while the other was representing his school colors in a collegiate event. While neither angler came away with first place honors, both had excellent tournaments.
Eddie Levin, of Westerville, and Kobe Thompson, of Crooksville, fished Lake Champlain in their respective tournaments.

Youth fishing event in Ohio honors late Arbogast Lure Co. leader

On a sunny day during an otherwise rainy week, The Fishing Foundation hosted a youth fishing event at Division of Wildlife District Three Headquarters in Akron. Three ponds at District Three headquarters that are designated for young people 15 and younger had 35 kids from the Boys and Girl Clubs of Northeast Ohio catching sunfish, bluegills, bass, and channel catfish.

Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs event continues to grow in Perry County, Ohio

Five years of spearheading a Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs (HOFNOD) youth event has earned Perry County Sheriff William R. Barker recognition from the Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW).
Held at the Perry County Gun Club Lake north of New Lexington on Saturday, June 17, the 2023 fishing day drew 245 youngsters up to 17 years old. Awards were given to the young anglers who caught the biggest fish in one of the four age groups.

Fishing ambassador, Sol Curtis, named newest member of Ohio Wildlife Council

On June 30, the press release read: “Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has made the following appointments.” The eighteenth name on the list said that Solomon J. Curtis, of Dresden (Muskingum County), has been appointed to the Ohio Wildlife Council for a term beginning June 30 and ending January 31, 2025.
Curtis has served as an ODNR Division of Wildlife (DOW) Fishing Ambassador along with Corneilus Harris for the past five years. When asked about the life experiences that qualified him to become a council member, he related the role fishing played in his life, his desire to promote conservation, preserve wildlife habitat, and to bring all this to Ohio’s young people.

16-year-old luremaker from Ohio making a name in business

If there had been a “Youngest Entrepreneur Award” bestowed upon a vendor at February’s National Fishing Expo in Columbus the trophy would have made the return trip to Quincy, Ohio, in the arms of Brezlyn Reneer. This 16-year-old young lady is the owner of Breezy Bombers, a soft plastic bait company.
Brezlyn started making baits when she was 12. At this point she was making baits at no charge for her stepfather and his bass club buddies. Two years later, she officially started Breezy Bombers.
