Former Ohio Division of Wildlife chiefs reflect on their experience in the role

In the midst of the 2026 Ohio State Fair, a sportmen’s summer celebration was held at the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Natural Resources Park on the state fairgrounds.
The event was hosted by ODNR Director Mary Mertz, Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW) Chief Kendra Wecker and fellow staff members. Attendees moved from the registration area to the Natural Resources Amphitheater at 6 p.m. where the event’s featured speakers included three former DOW chiefs.

Commentary: Lake Erie veterans walleye event gives back in big ways

Lake Erie’s corps of charter captains are composed of the best fishing guides anywhere a boat can be reserved. Whether it’s walleye or perch, Lake Erie charter captains are renowned for returning to their respective marinas with coolers full of the day’s limit.
However, when more than 100 charter captains sailed from Ohio’s Magee East Campground Marina on June 20 this year, they already had the most important limit on their boats before the first walleye hit a cooler.

Catfishing on Ohio’s Seneca Lake with a pair of ‘pros’

When the young man walked up to the Ohio Outdoor News booth at the National Fishing Expo in Columbus last January, he gave away his identity as soon as he smiled.

All the years removed from the Junior Renegades bass fishing club and 13 years in the service of our nation couldn’t disguise Tyler Barnhart when he asked if I recognized him. He became an accomplished bass fisherman as a junior angler, but an earlier angling experience forged his true fishing preference.

Ohio’s Lloyd Lynch still punching hunting tags at 101 years old

Lloyd Lynch, of Dayton, Ohio, is a lifetime deer and turkey hunter who annually hunts in three or four and sometimes five states. One year he harvested nine turkeys across five states. From the mounts on his living room wall, he has done a lifetime’s worth of trophy hunting homework.
“Lifetime” takes on a special meaning in describing Lynch because he is currently 101 years young. And he’s drawing a bead on a target that has 102 in the 10-ring.

Ohio’s Rocky Fork bass tournament yields nearly 6-pound largemouth

Opening day for the Perry County Anglers was Sunday, March 29, at Rocky Fork Lake in Highland County near Hillsboro, Ohio. Even more important than a bunch of cabin-fevered anglers showing up for the season’s first tournament, Rocky Fork’s bass were more than ready to get the fishing party started.

Ohio angler Ab Reed marks 49 years competing on bass tour

The strength of any organization depends on a solid foundation. For the Perry County Anglers in Ohio, that foundation is anchored by a member who will be competing for the 49th consecutive year when the season opens at Rocky Fork Lake on March 29.
“I joined the club in its second year because I didn’t know anything about it the first year,” said Ab Reed. “That was 1978, and I’ve fished the club every year since then.”
