Some of the top past, present, and future anglers meet up at Ohio fishing expo

The annual National Fishing Expo recently returned to Columbus for its traditional three days of everything fishing.
The Feb. 7-9 affair featured fishing tackle, travel destinations, and top-notch professional anglers sharing their insights at hourlong seminars held at a mini arena semi-circling the Hawg Trough, a huge aquarium on wheels stocked with gamefish. The biggest draw at the 2025 Expo was former Bassmaster Classic champion Mike Iaconelli, of Pitts Grove, New Jersey.

Catching up with former Ohio fish chief: Rich Carter stays busy fishing tournament circuits

When a former Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW) “fish chief” retired after an 18-year run with the division, the “Gone fishing” sign that appeared on his front door never had a more appropriate landing zone.
Rich Carter retired in February 2023 and began a fishing quest that has seen him average four days a week on waters from Florida to Minnesota.

Ohio bass circuit’s Angler of the Year comes down to the wire

The season ending two-day American Bass Anglers (ABA) tournament in Ohio took place at Delaware Lake on Aug. 17-18. Billed as “Tournaments for the Weekend Bass Angler,” the ABA circuit is the second longest running bass tournament series in the world, according to ABA Central Division Director Barry Davis.
“Only B.A.S.S. has been having bass tournaments longer than the ABA,” said Davis.

Fallen heroes mark the path to Ohio fishing spots

They stand at attention, alone and silent at their final deployment. They are not standing in a faraway jungle or desolate desert.
They stand guard along Ohio highways. Their uniforms have been replaced with signs bearing their names. No explanation is needed. To read the names of servicemen and women on these signs is enough to know these veterans paid the ultimate price.

Hooked on Fishing event draws in nearly 200 kids in Ohio

The only thing more prevalent than sunshine on Saturday, June 15, at the Perry County Gun Club Lake was kids catching catfish at the sixth annual Perry County Sheriff’s Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs (HOFNOD) angling event.
With largemouth bass and numerous bluegills also being landed by the 193 young anglers in attendance, the day was a complete success from the catching to the eating with a free hot dog lunch prepared by Perry County Sheriff (Chef) William R. Barker.

Governor celebrates Inland Fish Ohio with zeal

Fishing with the current governor at Lake Erie on Fish Ohio Day is a longstanding summer tradition for Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW) personnel, members of the media, and invited guests. At the “walleye capital of the world,” the primary target fish for the day is the abundant walleyes that call our great lake home.
However, Gov. Mike DeWine’s passion for the outdoors led him to institute a second day dedicated to angling in Ohio.
