Minnesota’s shotgun zone for deer hunting mostly eliminated in Senate bill

The Senate bill eliminates the shotgun zone with the exception of Olmsted and Dodge counties. This means hunters can use rifles to hunt deer where in the past, the southern zone only allowed shotguns and pistols.
The amendment to eliminate the shotgun zone wasn’t in the House omnibus bill, so it will be a discussion point in conference committee.

Northeast Minnesota brook trout: Water high, fast early, but area offers great opportunity

The trout-fishing season kicked off April 15 for inland streams in Minnesota. With snow and ice melting in the northeast, there’s anticipation of high water and tough fishing conditions currently, but the North Shore offers a destination to catch quality trout. In addition to steelhead opportunities, the region contains ample brook trout and often has lesser fishing pressure compared to some parts of southeastern Minnesota.

Kentucky research looks at effectiveness of bioacoustic carp barrier

The Minnesota Legislature has introduced a couple of bills regarding an Asian carp deterrent/barrier being placed at Lock and Dam 5 on the Mississippi River. These bills haven’t been passed by either the House or Senate, but it’s been an important discussion point during this year’s legislative session. The deterrent proposed for Lock and Dam 5 is similar to the carp deterrent at Barkley Dam near Grand River, Ky.

Minnesota Legislature nears finish line on bills for outdoors

Dollars slashed for fish hatcheries, boat accesses; fees raised for fishing licenses, boat registrations; and a ban on wolf hunt?
The Minnesota House and Senate approved Legacy omnibus bills this past week. The bills will head to conference committee at the end of April. The House also passed its environment, climate and energy omnibus bill on Monday, April 17, with the Senate bill still going through committee hearings on its version.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz hosts annual turkey hunt in Northfield

Hunters pursued gobblers on private land in Dakota County. The only turkey that was tagged from the day came from Greta Alquist, who is a member of Minnesota DNR’s R3 program (recruit, retain, reactivate). She was guided by James Burnham, DNR’s R3 coordinator.
The R3 program engages people who aren’t familiar with hunting and fishing to learn from mentors as they embark on hunts or fishing trips together.

Optimistic outlook for Minnesota’s spring wild turkey hunt

Despite the difficult and unpredictable winter, turkey biologists still expect a strong 2023 wild turkey-hunting season.
Clayton Lenk, district biologist for the National Wild Turkey Federation, and Tim Lyons, upland game research scientist at the Minnesota DNR, agree that wild turkeys operate on a clock-like pattern regardless of whether there’s snow on the ground or it’s a warm spring.
