Omnibus bills in Minnesota include Asian carp, CWD, BWSR

Funding to slow or halt the advance of Asian carp is not presently moving forward. House File 2310, authored by Rep. Rick Hansen, DFL-South St. Paul, and Senate File 2438, authored by Sen. Foung Hawj, DFL-St. Paul, provided funds for further studies and research on the carp issue, but so far the bills do not include the $16.8 million request to build a carp barrier at Lock and Dam 5 on the Mississippi River.

Hungry deer targeting livestock food, trees of farmers in Minnesota

The winter has been severe for wildlife across Minnesota. Heavy snow came early and is hanging around, forcing wildlife to find other avenues for food – often food intended for livestock.
Deer, especially, are in survival mode and depredation calls are coming to the Minnesota DNR more frequently.

Have silver carp hit critical mass in Minnesota waters of the Mississippi?

Members of Minnesota’s Senate Environment, Climate, and Legacy Committee last week debated spending millions on an Asian carp barrier on the Mississippi River, just days after the DNR reported the highest state capture to date of the invasive fish.
The committee meeting to discuss Senate File 2037, authored by Sen. John Hoffman, DFL-Champlin, March 23, offered many a chance to air grievances about what hasn’t been done to stop the advance of the destructive fish.

Later-than-normal ice-out expected this spring in Minnesota

There are a lot of anglers and boat owners asking the same question at this time of year: When will I get my boat in the water?
The ice-out period is just beginning in Minnesota, working its way from south to north. This spring some experts expect ice-out to be later than usual – unless a wave of warm weather arrives soon. Most likely, Minnesotans can expect to see ice across at least some of the state for the foreseeable future.
