Twin Cities to host Backcountry Hunters and Anglers’ 2024 National Rendezvous

Montana-based Backcountry Hunters and Anglers announced today that its 2024 North American Rendezvous will take place at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds from April 18-20, 2024. It’ll be the first time that the event will happen east of the Mississippi River and coincides with BHA’s 20th anniversary.
Past rendezvous all have been in the Intermountain West, and the previous three years have been in the group’s home city of Missoula, Mont.
“It doesn’t get any bigger for myself and the rest of the Minnesota board,” said Eli Mansfield, chair of the BHA Minnesota chapter. “This is like the Super Bowl of conservation. We can’t wait to showcase Minnesota as a premier outdoor destination in the country.”

Minnesota DNR assuming oversight of state’s deer farms as new laws take shape

Oversight of whitetailed deer farms in Minnesota was a frequently discussed matter during this year’s legislative session, with the Legislature passing new laws that took effect July 1 and other rules that will take effect Sept. 1 and in 2024.
One of the changes: the Minnesota DNR having full authority over those deer farms. The DNR previously had had regulatory authority of whitetailed deer farms until 2005, when the Legislature transferred that authority to the state’s Board of Animal Health.

Started in 1955, Minnesota’s August roadside survey remains important part of wildlife management

The gravel roads across southern Minnesota are covered with state DNR vehicles during the first two weeks of August each year as officials conduct an important annual roadside survey.
The agency has conducted its roadside survey for ring-necked pheasants and other game species every year since 1955. Originally launched to count pheasants, the survey has grown to monitor other critters like white-tailed deer, rabbits, sandhill cranes, mourning doves, partridge, and wild turkeys.

Two-line fishing arrives for parts of Minnesota rivers

During the past month, angling guide Darren Troseth has been able to use more rod holders in his boat. On July 1, a new law took effect that allows the use of two-line fishing on part of the Minnesota River and Pool 2 of the Mississippi River.
Troseth, a fishing guide on the Mississippi, St. Croix, and Minnesota rivers, is taking advantage of the new law after advocating for it during the past decade. There have been many new changes and laws for rivers in Minnesota, including bait laws, but two-line fishing has been one of the biggest and challenging bills to pass.

Drought having effect on natural bear foods in Minnesota

Minnesota’s bear-baiting season began Aug. 11, and the bear-hunting season kicks off Sept. 1, so the Minnesota DNR finished up bear food reports this past week to inform what hunters can expect heading into the 2023 season.
Andy Tri, Minnesota DNR bear project leader, said bear food availability in the wild correlates with hunter success. This year, Tri predicts it might be more difficult for hunters because of ample berry and acorn availability.
“This year is mostly a story about the drought and kind of how resilient the forest is,” Tri said. “Generally speaking, we’re in good shape this year.”

Minnesota vets paddle the Mississippi River for soldier suicide awareness

The Mississippi River stretches for 2,350 miles from Minnesota’s Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico, according to the National Park Service. Dave Hardy and Frank Lachinski, two military veterans from Itasca County in Minnesota, will be canoeing the entire river this summer and fall for one important cause: to “stop soldier suicide.”
Those three words are written on the canoe and the truck that’s heading to the Gulf of Mexico. Solider suicide has affected the two men in different ways.

Positive reports for Minnesota’s wild rice crop leading up to Aug. 15 opener

The wild rice harvest season kicks off Aug. 15, and reports suggest good conditions for a strong crop in 2023.
With a week to go before the season officially begins, many factors can influence the crop, so DNR managers recommend scouting ahead before heading out for a “pick.”

Bait supply shortage affecting Minnesota anglers

The topic of low bait inventory came up repeatedly at the MN-FISH summit on May 3 in Rogers. Trappers and suppliers on hand pleaded for help in improving the bait supply for retailers and their customers.
Marshall Koep, owner of Clitherall-based Urbank Live Bait Co., said the bait supply hasn’t improved this summer. Meetings with the DNR have discussed solutions to improve the supply, but ultimately, Koep believes Minnesota needs to import from other states.
