You can hang your hat on Blackwater Lake’s bass fishery near Longville, Minn.

Blackwater Lake near Longville is just 771 acres in size, but when it comes to spots to fish for bass in this neck of the woods, it has to be near the top of any list.
It’s not just because Blackwater supports both largemouth and smallmouth bass populations, which it does; that in itself is a pretty big draw. But, the most noteworthy factor here is the lake’s high bass numbers and the impressive size structure of those fish it kicks out on a consistent basis.

Carp deterrent on Minnesota waters of the Mississippi might need design extension

The Minnesota DNR is inching closer on the Lock and Dam 5 carp deterrent as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officially began designing the underwater Acoustic Deterrent System (uADS) at the site.
Based on statutory project timeline of completing the deterrent by June 30, 2029, Carli Wagner, DNR project coordinator, said the team remains on track to meet that overall deadline.

Minnesota’s Waterville hatchery nears end of design phase

After receiving $24 million in 2023, the Waterville hatchery project is nearing the end of its planning phase, with about 90% of it completed. If scheduling remains on track, the Minnesota DNR and its construction team could break ground sometime this year for the new facility.
“We’re at that 90% design phase now. So, making sure that all of our hopes, wishes, and dreams, if you will, are all included in this design, and then making sure our needs are met,” said Mandy Erickson, the DNR’s fisheries operations consultant.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula bear harvest exceeds predicted kill for fifth year

For at least the fifth year in a row, bear registrations in the Upper Peninsula have exceeded the Michigan DNR’s predicted harvest. This time, the difference between the two numbers is the second highest it has been.
The difference between the two numbers previously was highest in 2024. The reason for that is numbers for the desired harvest have not kept pace with the increasing bear population in the region.
