We spent time at Sportsman’s Lodge and Border View Lodge on Lake of the Woods recently and both places are dialed in on the walleye and sauger fishing. Here’s a breakdown on what worked and how we caught fish.

“We do have a story we’d like to share with the public, now that you ask.”
That comment originated from a question cast at Scott Hale during the annual Division of Wildlife’s dinner held at the governor’s residence in September. Hale is the executive administrator of fish management and research at the Division of Wildlife (DOW) in the Ohio DNR (ODNR). Brandon Evans, 19, of Poquoson, Va., is the recipient of the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) Three-Position Smallbore Distinguished Badge No. 1. His mark in the history books comes after years of persistent dedication and arrived, to him, by surprise.
“When Brad Donoho told me I had earned the badge, I was excited, but I didn’t even realize in the moment that it was No. 1,” he said.
Distinguished Badges are the highest individual awards authorized by the U. S. Government for excellence in marksmanship competition.

I was up on land I recently bought in Washington County, N.Y., putting a wooden seat on a metal stand. As I was in the stand I started hearing a weird noise.
At first, I thought it was a strange bird. I was running an impact, so it was loud through the woods and I didn’t think much of the sound. As I climbed out of the stand and heard the noise, I realized that it was coming from the ground and immediately recognized the sound was of a crying fawn.
As we finish up the year and reflect on the successes and failures of the past 12 months, now is the best time to make those 2024 goals and start the process of eliminating what you failed at in 2023. It is OK to admit you had failures.
Guess what? We all have them, so list them to start the process of moving forward. Coaching junior-high-school-age children, I often tell them that we learn more from our failures than our successes, so outdoorsmen and women need to do the same.
