Dan Ladd: Who won in recent court decisions on New York gun laws? Depends on who you ask

Depending on where you get your news from, New York’s gun owners are either big losers or big winners following the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals panel decisions on New York’s gun laws. These all have to do with individual challenges through lawsuits against certain provisions in Gov. Kathy Hochul’s 2022 Concealed Carry Improvement Act.

In-lieu-of-tax payments doubled for Pennsylvania public lands

Recently passed legislation increases the amount of payment in lieu of taxes to municipalities, schools and counties with state-owned land, but it doesn’t mean the Pennsylvania Game Commission and other state agencies will pay more.
House Bill 1300 passed on Dec. 13, and the fiscal code legislation includes an increase in the per acre rate – often referred to as PILT – that is paid to local governments.

Ohio DNR adds 844 acres of public land in Coshocton County

In an attempt to prevent American Electric Power (AEP) from selling off 844 acres of previously strip-mined land in Coshocton County to private developers, the Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW) recently bought the acreage for $1.8 million, according to John Sambuco, the division’s federal aid lands coordinator.
“AEP is in the process of divesting most of their past power generation land. If we do not act now, those lands will be sold off to private interests, removing them from public recreation,” he said.

Looking at an out-of-state big-game hunt in 2024? The time to plan is now

For most folks, deer hunting is about the last thing on their minds right now. Aside from having just finished up their deer seasons, the looming holidays suck up a lot of mental oxygen as we make sure all of the to-dos are taken care of.

As for crazy people like me, I’m already checking out next year’s fall calendar to see when I might pull my annual disappearing act. Once you’ve gone beyond state borders to chase deer, it’s easy to get hooked.

Ohio’s two-day gun season goes well for many hunters

Very good weather on the first – and only – Saturday of Ohio’s recent two-day firearms deer-hunting season delivered a surprisingly good crop of animals.
For the Sunday – or the second day of the two-day season – not so much. In all, the Dec. 16 and Dec. 17 oft-called “bonus gun season” yielded 15,469 deer, nearly identical to the 2022 two-day season take of 15,164 animals.
