The most pressured fish probably, though, is largemouth and smallmouth bass.

The lake is so well known for crappies that Crappie USA held a tournament on Grand Lake St. Marys on the last weekend in April.

The primary species sought by anglers here is largemouth bass. You’ll find plenty of fish, though they run rather small.

Big Darby is a smallmouth bass haven. And private and public interests do what they can to get the word out concerning the value and vulnerability of Big Darby as a public resource.

As of 2021, the saugeye population has rebounded once again and these hybrids are now back in good numbers.

Bass fishing is good at Adams Lake, and 2-, 3-, and 4-pound bass are not uncommon, a testament to the 15-inch keeper limit.

Bluegills and pumpkinseeds are also excellent target species here.

An electrofishing survey conducted in the spring of 2019 showed that Burr Oak still supports one of the best bass fisheries in the district, with good densities and a good percentage of bass over 15

A better bass fishery has also increased predation on bluegills, which were abundant but stunted prior to the renovation. Today, a good population of bluegills 7 inches or larger are present and readily caught by
