Minnesota’s Lake Pepin isn’t a preferred opener option, but maybe it should be

Although it’s one of the Minnesota DNR-managed 10 large lakes, Lake Pepin likely doesn’t top the list for most walleye anglers as a primo destination for the May 13 fishing opener.

The southeastern Minnesota lake doesn’t generate splashy headlines or get the attention given such hallowed fisheries as Lake Mille Lacs, Upper Red Lake, Rainy Lake, or that breathtakingly scenic system known as Lake of the Woods. And Minnesota’s much-vaunted mom-and-pop resort culture doesn’t exist on Lake Pepin’s windswept shores.

Minnesota’s river anglers encouraged to be patient as water levels steadily drop

As flood waters continue to recede in the state’s river systems, state law enforcement and fisheries officials are asking anglers to exercise caution as they get back on the water.
High water for roughly three weeks along the state’s largest river systems – the Mississippi, St. Croix, Minnesota, and others – closed public boat ramps, halted barge traffic, swamped marinas and campgrounds and hiking trails, and deluged restaurants and other establishments that anglers frequent.

Wet Prairie Pothole Region states might boost duck production

As the Minnesota DNR prepares for its spring aerial waterfowl survey in early May, waterfowl officials throughout the Upper Midwest say the table is set for a strong duck production year as mallards, pintails, and other birds continue to settle throughout the Prairie Pothole Region of Minnesota, the Dakotas, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.

Dirty stream water need not cloud your trout fishing plans

The makeshift gravel parking area near the trout stream in western Wisconsin already had two cars idling in it, and another had just sped off.
It was a cool morning by July standards. Rain was in the forecast. And the thunderstorm from the previous night had likely sullied the stream’s pristine clarity, transforming its color from moonshine-clear to a tint resembling bourbon in a shot glass.

Creel survey details angler use, health of fishery on the Minnesota River

The results of last year’s Minnesota River angler creel survey – the first one conducted on the state’s third-longest river in 25 years – are in, and the findings will help Minnesota DNR Fisheries officials manage the meandering waterway for the foreseeable future.
Minnesota River anglers predominantly target channel catfish, flathead catfish, and walleyes, and the Minnesota River is an important shore-fishing resource.

Trout ‘keepers’ to hit streams this Saturday for Minnesota’s opener

The traditional “meat” stream-trout opener is set for April 15 across Minnesota, with stream flows and weather conditions in the heavily fished southeast shaping up well for Saturday after an inordinately cold start to spring.
The state’s cold-water streams that meander throughout the Driftless Area of southeastern Minnesota – a picturesque region of limestone bluffs, coulees, hills, and gurgling spring-fed waters of roughly 700 miles – are home to brown, rainbow, and brook trout. According to the Minnesota DNR, trout populations are near or at all-time highs on many streams.

Excise tax federal funding source sends record cash haul to Minnesota for outdoor use

Thanks largely to firearms and ammunition sales, the Minnesota DNR has been allotted a record $49 million and change for fiscal year 2023 from the Wildlife and Sport Fish and Restoration program, an annual agency funding source accrued from federal excise taxes on hunting, shooting, and fishing equipment, and small-engine fuel.
The funding is used to support state wildlife conservation efforts, hunting and fishing education, and outdoor recreation, among other uses.

Night-fishing tactics to catch lunker trout

Whether you fish Wisconsin, Minnesota or Michigan, the allure of stream-trout fishing under the cover of darkness is no secret: It’s all about catching monster trout.
No one knows how many trout anglers fish at night, but most agree it’s likely one of the smallest demos in fishing, whether they’re using a fly, a lure or dunking a worm. After all, fishing more or less blind takes extreme fortitude and an adventure-seeking attitude that accommodates plenty of risk that most anglers don’t have.
