Steve Knutson freely admits that he didn’t know the first thing about writing a book, let alone self-publishing one. The entire process, more or less, began as a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.
“I really didn’t have a clue,” said Knutson, an avid waterfowler from Apple Valley, Minn., laughing. “I had no idea what I was getting myself into.”
The book, which took roughly six-plus years to complete, features duck camps dating back to the 1860s and to the present.

Minnesota DNR releases new draft plan for Red Lake Wildlife Management Area

The last time the master plan for Red Lake Wildlife Management Area in northwestern Minnesota was updated, 3M company began selling Post-It Notes, former Beatles member John Lennon was killed by a crazed fan, and the U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team beat the Soviet Union on its way to winning a gold medal in Lake Placid, New York.
Much has changed on Red Lake WMA since 1980, the year the last plan was written and formalized – and intended to cover a 10-year period. The updated 119-page draft plan summarizes the management activities on the 325,000-acre WMA, the state’s largest.

Evan Griggs and his buddy called it “The Amazon.” A watery jungle of sorts in Minnesota’s urban core.
The location in question: a city park on Minnehaha Creek in Minneapolis. This was spring 2013, and serious flooding had pushed water over the creek’s banks and into the woods on both sides. After all, pink salmon are the most abundant Pacific salmon, and guides are more than willing to cater to clients who like to experience prodigious river runs of early-autumn fish that are often über-easy to catch with flies, with light tackle, and other gear more commonly associated with spring-creek trout. If you believe the hype, 100-fish days on some rivers are a real thing and not just marketing hyperbole. It can, and has, happened.

Late last month, the morning after returning from a trip to California to take in the state’s iconic, towering redwoods, Rich Halvorsen’s phone lit up.
Halvorsen, president of the Mantrap Lake Association in Hubbard County near Park Rapids, said the messages were about Twin Cities-based 3M Company’s decision to sell its 680-acre Wonewok resort and conference center on the lake as part of a company cost-cutting strategy that also includes thousands of layoffs.

Although it’s one of the Minnesota DNR-managed 10 large lakes, Lake Pepin likely doesn’t top the list for most walleye anglers as a primo destination for the May 13 fishing opener.

Minnesota’s river anglers encouraged to be patient as water levels steadily drop

As flood waters continue to recede in the state’s river systems, state law enforcement and fisheries officials are asking anglers to exercise caution as they get back on the water.
High water for roughly three weeks along the state’s largest river systems – the Mississippi, St. Croix, Minnesota, and others – closed public boat ramps, halted barge traffic, swamped marinas and campgrounds and hiking trails, and deluged restaurants and other establishments that anglers frequent.
