Quartering deer in the field, landowner turkey preference up for debate during Wisconsin spring hearings

Wisconsin hunters could quarter or bone out deer they harvest and leave the inedible parts in the woods if a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) advisory question to be offered at the annual spring hearings April 8 were supported and eventually became a rule change.
The DNR received approval from the Natural Resources Board (NRB) at the board’s
Feb. 28 meeting to ask five advisory questions involving wildlife management when the public votes in person Monday, April 8, or online from April 10-13.

Wisconsin Natural Resources Board hears 2023’s deer hunt rundown

The Wisconsin DNR’s final report for the 2023 deer season showed an 11% overall reduction in harvest from 2022, although the Southern Farmland Zone exceeded the 2022 harvest.
Jeff Pritzl, DNR deer program specialist, told Natural Resources Board (NRB) members Feb. 28 that though northern hunters are exasperated over the lower harvest, it wasn’t really any different from the 2019 harvest.

Wisconsin ‘Lakes at Stake’ group tackles wake boat issue

Lakes at Stake Wisconsin (LASW), a new bi-partisan group, has formed so members can advocate for wakeboat regulations to protect lakes and lake users from damage.
Organized last September, LASW focuses on a single issue: damage to lakes, properties, and tourism by wake boats.

Wisconsin DNR facing ‘red ink reality’ without a license fee hike

Not bankrupt, but not flush with cash either may best describe the budget situation for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
DNR officials explained to the Natural Resources Board (NRB), at its Jan. 24 meeting, that a “structural deficit” exists and will become a red-ink reality in 2026. Paul Neumann, DNR budget and policy supervisor, said the deficit is significant.

Members hope to revive Wisconsin’s Sporting Heritage Council

The Sporting Heritage Council, an organization created by the Wisconsin legislature in 2011 and coordinated by the Department of Natural Resources, has not met since 2022.
An article in the last issue of Wisconsin Outdoor News stated the council had met in October 2023, but the council last met virtually on Oct. 18, 2022, when there was no quorum and members couldn’t take a position on matters. The fact that the council did not meet in 2023 and that council members have heard little from the DNR has raised concerns about the future of the council among members.

Wisconsin’s Sporting Heritage Council languishing… for now

What’s happened to the Sporting Heritage Council?
The council was created in 2011 to give advice to the governor, legislature, and Natural Resources Board on hunting, fishing, and trapping issues. It also is supposed to focus on recruitment and retention of these participants, and increase access to outdoor opportunities. The council used to meet several times a year, but the last meeting was held Oct. 18, 2023.

Wisconsin conservation group donates $100,000 toward skid steer that will help build prairie chicken habitat

The second oldest conservation group in Wisconsin, the Dane County Conservation League (DCCL), donated $100,000 to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to pay for half of a Cat 299D3 skid steer.
The donation was accepted by the Natural Resources Board (NRB) at its Jan. 24 meeting in Madison. The machine, outfitted with a Fecon brush head, will be used to improve habitat for grassland birds in central Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Natural Resources Board gives DNR the nod on 10% fewer bear tags this fall

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) reduced the bear harvest quota from last season for 2024, which will result in 10% fewer tags to be issued.
The 2023 bear harvest took a significant dip, totaling 3,005 bears, whereas the kill in an average year is around 4,000. The 2023 harvest included 26 bears shot on agriculture damage permits, 25 during learn-to-hunt events, and 29 bears by tribal off-reservation hunters.
