Wake boats remain a hot topic at Wisconsin’s Dane County public meeting

The Dane County Conservation Congress and DNR public spring fish and wildlife meeting attracted some 87 people, and wake boats were the hot topic of the evening.
Maybe it was after-effects of the solar eclipse earlier that afternoon, but, a bit surprisingly, questions about deer and additional fishing restrictions drew little in the way of comments from attendees.

Emergency rule would open sport fishing on Wisconsin’s Minocqua chain if Lac du Flambeau spears walleyes

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) approved a scope statement at its April 10 meeting that will allow the DNR to begin drafting rules that would allow anglers to harvest walleyes in the Minocqua Chain of Lakes this summer now that the Lac du Flambeau tribe has declared its intent to spear the chain this spring.

Air guns in, ‘no doe’ in the north and wolf population goal out in Wisconsin

With the ending of the Wisconsin legislative session in March, several new natural resources bills were signed into law, while others were vetoed by Gov. Tony Evers.
Evers did sign several bills that: allow hunters to use air-guns during hunting seasons open to firearms; create for a full free fishing January weekend (it had been a Saturday); allows fishermen to transport fillets of a game fish as long as there is digital photographic proof, with time and date, of the fish’s original length; and signed a new law to protect and restore wetlands, streams, and floodplains to prevent damage from floods.

Wisconsin’s Central Elk Zone to see hunt this fall for the first time

A few lucky hunters will have the chance to hunt elk in the Central Elk Management Zone in 2024 for the first time this fall.
The Natural Resources Board (NRB) heard an update at its April 10 meeting from Christina Kizewski, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wildlife biologist in Jackson County, that the DNR expects the central herd to number more than 180 animals this summer.
“An elk hunt in the Central Elk Management Zone is a true testament to the partnership and hard work that was incurred over the years of the reintroduction effort,” Kizewski said.

Wisconsin Natural Resources Board approves one permanent, several seasonal fish refuges

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) adopted rules creating refuges around fish passages and spawning areas where fish are concentrated and vulnerable to angler harvest.
The board’s approval came Feb. 28 and will continue the year-round fish refuge encompassing a new fish passage at the Kietzsch Park dam on the Milwaukee River. It also establishes seasonal fish refuges in state-managed walleye spawning marshes protecting walleyes throughout the Lake Winnebago system during spring spawning.

Oconto County buys old Wisconsin DNR ranger station

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) approved the sale of the old Oconto Falls DNR ranger station building and accepted the donation of 9.22 acres near Egg Harbor at its
Feb. 28 meeting.
The former Oconto Falls ranger station was no longer needed. The DNR received $150,000 from Oconto County, plus has the right of access to update the fire prevention sign.

Wisconsin Conservation Congress has 37 April 8 questions for spring hearings

Should forward-facing sonar (live scoping) be banned in Wisconsin? How about wildlife shining?
Does the state need better wake boat regulations? Should monarch butterflies be recognized as the state butterfly?
Those are some of the 37 advisory questions the Conservation Congress will offer on hunting, fishing, and trapping at the annual spring fish and game hearings set for Monday, April 8.

Upper Mississippi River Refuge set to celebrate 100 years

Will Dilg may be unknown to most hunters, trappers, and anglers who enjoy Mississippi River outings, but that should no longer be the case in 2024, with this year marking the 100th anniversary of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. Dilg is the “father” of that 261-mile gem of a refuge.
The refuge stretches from Wabasha, Minn., to Rock Island, Ill., and protects more than 240,000 acres of Mississippi River floodplain.
