Hatchlings of aging bigmouth buffalo floundering in Minnesota’s Rice Lake

With an average age of 79, the bigmouth buffalo that spawn at Minnesota's Rice Lake annually haven’t had a successful batch of hatchlings reach adulthood in around 50 years. New research is revealing insights into the native fish. (Photo by Walt Ford)

For many years, Sam Seybold, buffer specialist with the Aitkin County Soil and Water Conservation District, spear-fished for bigmouth buffalo in Minnesota’s Rice Lake.
“I noticed that the number (of bigmouth buffalo) seemed to be less and less, and I’d never see any young ones, small ones, or anything. I noticed that would be something that was somewhat concerning,” Seybold said.
He reached out to Dr. Alec Lackmann, an ichthyologist (fish researcher) with the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Swenson College of Science and Engineering, who previously had studied bigmouth buffalo.
