Midweek cold snap to aid ice-making on Minnesota lakes

Despite some snow, high winds, and mild weather that enveloped portions of Minnesota during the first week and weekend of December, ice formation has progressed nicely on the bigger lakes throughout the state. The latest stretch of cold air should help even more.
Lake of the Woods, Leech Lake, Lake Mille Lacs, and Lake Winnibigoshish appeared to be locked up going into the second week of December.

Conservation groups seek more clarity on Minnesota wage law

In mid-September, various conservation organizations met with Minnesota Department of Labor officials at a meeting to clarify the changes to the prevailing wage law that now will affect environment and conservation work.
After that meeting, the organizations sent a list of job descriptions that employees may complete on an environment project, and the Department of Labor tied those jobs to existing prevailing wage rates. The changes will almost double the hourly wage of conservation workers on various projects funded by the Legacy Amendment’s Outdoor Heritage Fund.

Study shows that, on average, perch are now smaller in Minnesota lakes

As Minnesota DNR gill-net surveys started dragging in fewer and fewer yellow perch over the decades, it led researchers to wonder: Are perch slowly disappearing from lakes or are they just too small to be caught in survey nets?

After surveying 8,000 perch across 28 lakes for about three years to find that answer, researchers suspect it’s the latter.

Legislation could give more land to Leech Lake Band in Minnesota

Minnesota U.S. Sen. Tina Smith, a member of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, is sponsoring legislation to expand on the acreage that was given from the federal government to the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe in 2020.
A proposed amendment to the legislation includes 4,362 acres that should have been a part of the original bill four years ago but was missed in the proposal, Smith says.

Early ice getting positive reviews in Minnesota, officials urge anglers to use caution

After two years of tenuous ice conditions thanks to record snowfalls and warm weather in Minnesota, this early-ice season is showing promising signs for potentially a solid year of lake ice across the state.
“It looks like we should be making some ice every day. We’ve got some single-digit temperatures overnight, which is nice, and there’s not much snow cover,” said Chad Mertz, owner of Pines Resort and Campground on Lake Winnibigoshish.

Fall river fishing produces big fish and lasting memories

Morale was admittedly somewhat low on Saturday, Nov. 16, when a large walleye broke free from Butch Faulkenberry’s line as he drew it closer to the boat to scoop up with a net.
But the mood quickly shifted to exhilaration when his son, Casey Faulkenberry, of Broken Bow, Neb., realized he might too have a big one on his line as the duo fished the Mississippi River.

Firearms safety instruction a multi-generational affair for this Minnesota family

For southern Minnesota’s Pelzel family, being a volunteer firearms safety instructor runs through their blood as it’s been a family norm passed down for three generations now.
“I would go with dad and grandpa to in-person classes when they were still held here, and I would just sit and listen, and I was always interested. I always told them that when I grew up, I was going to be an instructor, too,” said Alexa Pelzel, a recent high school graduate.

LCCMR approves new study of wild animals for bird flu in Minnesota

The Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources has approved University of Minnesota researchers’ request to study how the current bird flu outbreak is spreading in wild birds and mammals in Minnesota.
“What we know right now, birds – and for first time in Minnesota history – wild mammals, as well as domestic mammals have been affected by this virus,” said the principal investigator of the study, Dr. Arno Wuenschmann, during the LCCMR meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 13.
