Early ice getting positive reviews in Minnesota, officials urge anglers to use caution

With a little luck, ice anglers in Minnesota will be on good ice, catching fish, before the official winter season arrives. Such a scenario would be reward for those who endured the two previous modest (ice-wise) seasons. (Stock photo)

After two years of tenuous ice conditions thanks to record snowfalls and warm weather in Minnesota, this early-ice season is showing promising signs for potentially a solid year of lake ice across the state.
“It looks like we should be making some ice every day. We’ve got some single-digit temperatures overnight, which is nice, and there’s not much snow cover,” said Chad Mertz, owner of Pines Resort and Campground on Lake Winnibigoshish.
