Minnesota U.S. Sen. Tina Smith, a member of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, is sponsoring legislation to expand on the acreage that was given from the federal government to the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe in 2020.
A proposed amendment to the legislation includes 4,362 acres that should have been a part of the original bill four years ago but was missed in the proposal, Smith says.
