Study shows that, on average, perch are now smaller in Minnesota lakes

Yellow perch between 2 1⁄2 inches and 4 1⁄2 inches are too small to be caught in standard gill-net surveys that the Minnesota DNR routinely conducts on lakes. So, researchers used small-mesh nets and electrofishing to catch them and discovered abundant populations of small perch. (Photo courtesy of Beth Holbrook/Minnesota DNR)

As Minnesota DNR gill-net surveys started dragging in fewer and fewer yellow perch over the decades, it led researchers to wonder: Are perch slowly disappearing from lakes or are they just too small to be caught in survey nets?

After surveying 8,000 perch across 28 lakes for about three years to find that answer, researchers suspect it’s the latter.
