As Minnesota DNR gill-net surveys started dragging in fewer and fewer yellow perch over the decades, it led researchers to wonder: Are perch slowly disappearing from lakes or are they just too small to be caught in survey nets?
After surveying 8,000 perch across 28 lakes for about three years to find that answer, researchers suspect it’s the latter.
