University of Minnesota study shows zebra mussels tied to elevated fish mercury

The University of Minnesota researchers seeking to understand what walleyes and yellow perch eat in near-shore ecosystems on zebra mussel-infested lakes didn’t know the can of worms they’d open.

“We thought the story that we were interested in was more about food web dynamics,” said Naomi Blinick, a researcher and laboratory manager with University of Minnesota’s Larkin Lab. “But when we saw these results about mercury, we knew that this was a much bigger trend that we had to explore in more depth.”

Minnesota CWD cases are up, but remain in known zones

As of Tuesday, Nov. 26, there were 42 new confirmed cases of chronic wasting disease in hunter-harvested deer in 2024 and 34 suspected cases – all in known-CWD zones primarily in the southeastern part of Minnesota.
DPAs 646, 647, and 648 are seeing the most cases with 12, 13, and nine, respectively. Additionally, DPA 645 has four confirmed cases, DPA 649 has three cases, and 642 has one confirmed case. Right now, according to Erik Hildebrand, the Minnesota DNR’s wildlife health supervisor, the 2024 season clearly is trending to have more cases than last year’s total of 44 positives.

Flying squirrels in Minnesota? Researchers study populations that are currently colliding

Natural Resources Research Institute scientists have been studying two distinct flying squirrel populations now colliding in northern Minnesota. Meanwhile, some citizens in the region are surprised to learn that these critters are their neighbors.
It’s been fun to “tell people that you’re surrounded by these squirrels and getting to interact with people and spread the word that … these squirrels are here,” said Anna Peterson, a University of Minnesota-Duluth graduate student on the project.

Minnesota’s deer kill is up from 2023 as hunt winds down

As the firearms deer-hunting season drew to a close across much of Minnesota on Sunday, Nov. 17, firearms hunters had killed around 111,791 deer, a 5% increase from last year’s harvest, according to preliminary Minnesota DNR reports.
“(It’s) good news compared to last year. So harvest is up everywhere, so that’s good,” said Todd Froberg, the DNR’s big-game coordinator.
Froberg said he expects that when all deer-hunting seasons are over this year, total harvest will see about a 5% increase over last year’s take of 158,678 deer.

Lake Mille Lacs retains two-walleye limit this winter, with four-walleye limit on Upper Red

Given positive trends for walleye populations on Lake Mille Lacs and Upper Red Lake, the Minnesota DNR extended current walleye limits on both water bodies for the winter season at two and four, respectively.
The DNR approved a two-walleye limit on Mille Lacs for the upcoming winter season, as it was discussed during the mid-October Mille Lacs Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting.
