Minnesota DNR’s electronic licensing revamp expected to go live this spring

On Thursday, Feb. 6, the Minnesota DNR issued a statement explaining that the electronic licensing system will come online in the spring of this year in a two-phased approach.
The first phase will allow Minnesotans to purchase hunting and fishing licenses when it launches, followed by the second phase of allowing residents to register or title a watercraft or off-highway vehicles.

White Earth, Minnesota DNR enter accord on managing White Earth State Forest

On Tuesday, Feb. 3, the Minnesota DNR and White Earth Nation formalized a partnership in managing White Earth State Forest with a memorandum of understanding.
“We have very good working relationships and decided we would formally document that coordination work. And so, none of the work that was happening or that does happen between White Earth and DNR changes because of this,” said the DNR’s Regional Parks and Trails Northwest Regional Manager Ben Bergey.

Effective Feb. 9, perch daily limit on Minnesota’s Mille Lacs drops to 5

The Lake Mille Lacs yellow perch bite is shaping up to be another productive one this winter with Minnesota anglers as of Jan. 18 having harvested about 47% of their allowable 36,500 quota. Tribal anglers can harvest an equal amount of 36,500 pounds of yellow perch.
That healthy state harvest has prompted the DNR to tighten the daily perch limit on the lake for the remainder of this winter. DNR Fisheries Section Manager Brad Parsons confirmed to Outdoor News that effective Monday, Feb. 9, the yellow perch daily limit on Mille Lacs will drop from 10 to 5.

Northwest Minnesota elk survey wrapping up after a delay

A northwestern Minnesota DNR wildlife team is wrapping up its efforts to survey the three elk herds – Grygla, Kittson-Central, and Caribou-Vita.
“There was quite a bit of a delay early on. We were hoping to have this done by now, but weather got in the way, including some mechanical issues that had to be resolved with the aircraft and those kinds of things,” said Blane Klemek, the DNR’s northwest regional wildlife manager.
He added that despite the delays, it might have worked out in the agency’s favor since there wasn’t as much snowfall as there is now.

Northeast Minnesota whitetails sporting radio collars as part of new study

From now until March 31, researchers in Minnesota are trapping and radio collaring whitetails in and around the Fond du Lac Band of Chippewa reservation. They aim to track deer movement and habits in the vicinity in anticipation of the northeast elk restoration.
The catalyst for the study, says Jacob Haus, associate professor at Bemidji State University and project manager, is capturing data on deer before elk hit the landscape.

In recent years, the South St. Louis County Soil and Water Conservation District has received funding through the DNR’s Conservation Partners Legacy (CPL) Grant Program for various waterway improvement projects.
Some of them have focused on improving fish passage in Tischer Creek and the Talmadge River.
“Tischer Creek, it has the potential to be one of the highest quality urban brook trout streams in the nation,” said Tim Beaster, conservation specialist with the South St. Louis County SWCD.

Professor’s CWD prevalence model closely predicts this year’s rate in Minnesota

Looking back at the 2026 Minnesota white-tailed deer hunting season, University of St. Thomas Associate Professor Dr. Sergey Berg’s CWD model wasn’t too far off at predicting the disease’s prevalence.
Berg’s model specifically looked at deer permit areas 647 and 648, which make up most of Fillmore County in southeastern Minnesota. This year, the model predicted CWD would be prevalent in about 5.8% of the deer herd in DPAs 647 and 648. That prediction wasn’t far off from the DNR’s rate of about 6% based on the number of harvests and positive cases in those permit areas.
