Fall hunting hitting full stride in the Dakotas

After weeks of unseasonably high temperatures, the weather has turned cool and crisp in North Dakota and South Dakota on the heels of a wind-whipped cold front last week that blew through the region.
The same frontal system that delivered strong northwest winds and the season’s first frost also ushered in the first real migration of waterfowl into both North Dakota and South Dakota.

Here are three observations taken from a first duck hunt

It’s been more than 30 years since I enjoyed my first duck hunt, but I still remember many of the details. Hamlin County. A boat ride in the dark with my older brother. Nearly a box and a half of shells fired and nary a feather disturbed on a duck. Fall colors just starting to appear on the cottonwoods at the boat launch. An obsession with waterfowl and waterfowl hunting ignited.
A first-hunt experience sticks with you, and now I have another, as father rather than hunter, to file away in the memory bank.

New hunter access program launched in South Dakota

Pheasant hunters in South Dakota will have new acres of ground to walk in pursuit of the wily upland birds courtesy of a new statewide voluntary, incentive-based habitat access program set to launch this month.
The Public Access to Habitat (PATH) Program is a partnership-driven effort to boost access to areas of new upland habitat enrolled in long-term conservation programs across South Dakota. A $250,000 commitment from digital mapping company onX and the South Dakota Department of Tourism is providing the initial funding for the program, with a goal of creating new public access to 10,000 acres of quality habitat during the coming year.

Spring nest success in South Dakota points to a promising pheasant season ahead

It’s nearing the end of August, and for the fourth year in a row, upland game bird enthusiasts are without an official pheasant brood and habitat survey from the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks.
In the spring of 2020, the GF&P abandoned the survey, having partnered with the state Department of Tourism to develop a marketing campaign aimed at attracting more nonresident hunters to the state. So, in preparation for fall, hunters are largely left to anecdotes to gauge the upcoming season in South Dakota’s uplands.

Habitat stamp projects in the works in South Dakota

In 2020, the South Dakota Legislature approved the creation of a habitat stamp that anyone purchasing a hunting and fishing license would also be required to purchase. The money raised through this additional annual fee is earmarked for improving habitat – on the ground or in the water – and for access projects in the state.
The price of a habitat stamp is $10 for South Dakota residents and $25 for nonresidents, and the new fee has raised approximately $5 million annually for the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department.

Lessons learned for ‘prairie guy’ on trip into Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness

As my head emerged from the screen door of my tent, there were all sorts of things that could have caught my eye on the second morning of a recent trip with a group of youth and adults into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota.

North Dakota breeding duck survey a mix of highs, lows

On one hand, the North Dakota Game and Fish Department’s 76th annual spring breeding duck survey conducted in May showed an index of more than 3.4 million birds, up just 1.5% from last year, and that is good news.
Also good is the fact that the total number of wetlands, though down 26% from last year, still ranks as the seventh wettest spring in terms of wetland basins observed during the survey, during which four two-person crews traveled more than 800 miles of transects counting ducks and wetlands within 220 yards of the road.

Inaugural event raises $700,000 for South Dakota wildlife habitat

The thermometer might have suggested “summer,” but the fall hunting season was at the forefront of the minds of the 550 guests estimated to be gathered for the first-ever “Gala for a Century” held at the Sioux Falls Convention Center on June 3. The event was hosted by the Second Century Habitat Fund, a nonprofit organization established in 2019 to advocate for habitat development related to pheasant hunting in South Dakota.
