What gives with South Dakota’s Prairie Unit elk tags? Plus, a goose migration update

The 2024 South Dakota legislative session is chugging along, including movement on a number of outdoors-related bills.
While an attempt to increase the habitat stamp fee for nonresidents failed, efforts to create a conservation license plate and emblem are ongoing, as is a bill that will add fluorescent pink to the spectrum of colors allowed that meet the visibility requirement for big-game hunters.
There are meatier issues at play in the halls of the Capitol in Pierre as well.

A look at North Dakota’s record-breaking midwinter waterfowl survey

Unseasonably warm weather and a lack of snow cover contributed to a record number of Canada geese observed by wildlife officials in North Dakota during the annual midwinter survey of waterfowl in the state.
According to Mike Szymanski, North Dakota Game and Fish Department chief migratory game bird management supervisor, more than 300,000 Canada geese were counted during the survey, far surpassing the previous record of just over 220,000 Canada geese.

Is the duck boom about to bust? Some of the numbers are concerning

It’s been a tough year for our waterfowl-hunting friends down South. The few rounds of severe winter weather that affected wetland and food conditions in Canada, North Dakota, and South Dakota during the months of October, November, and December were enough to push some ducks and geese out of the breeding grounds.

Mild weather causing a waterfowl flight delay in the Dakotas

The late-October winter storm that delivered big winds, dropped snow, and sent temperatures plummeting across portions of North Dakota and South Dakota was supposed to be a game-changer for waterfowl numbers in these two states.
Meanwhile, hunters in mid-latitude and southern states braced for what was certain to be a massive influx of new ducks and geese – birds that had been enjoying their time in the Prairie Pothole Region before Old Man Winter sent them packing.

South Dakota walleye record falls again as Pierre angler catches nearly 18-pound fish

After standing for more than 20 years, the South Dakota state hook-and-line walleye record has fallen for the second time in the past four weeks. The most recent state-record fish, a 17-pound, 13.92-ounce beast, was caught on Nov. 11 by Keith Pazour of Pierre on Lake Oahe.
