Carp deterrent funding in Minnesota likely available; so what’s up next?

For the past two years, there’s been a spotlight on Asian carp and trying to find ways to fund a carp deterrent at Lock and Dam 5 of the Mississippi River. During the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council meeting on March 26, the council found an answer when it approved $12 million for the Minnesota DNR to construct a carp deterrent.
Since the issue has focused on funding for years, next steps haven’t been scrutinized as closely. With funding approved, the next question is how does a deterrent get built.

Could low water levels impact fish spawning runs in Minnesota this spring?

Springtime and rising (eventually) temperatures signal the onset of spawning seasons for various fish species, a crucial period for most anglers. The mild winter and last summer’s drought have resulted in lower-than-usual water levels this spring. These conditions pose challenges for spawning among game fish such as northern pike, perch, and walleyes.

Omnibus bills introduced in Minnesota, target budgets unveiled

The Minnesota Legislature reached its second deadline Friday, March 22, which means omnibus bills start to roll out for the various committees. The Senate Environment, Climate, and Legacy Committee finalized the first draft of its omnibus bills March 21, while the House Environment and Natural Resources Finance and Policy Committee introduced its bill last Friday.
The omnibus bills usually include many individual bills heard throughout the early part of session, and the two committees typically have identical bills to pass the House and Senate. The main portions are identical, but some smaller details aren’t alike.

Minnesota officials seeking answers to Lake Traverse fish kill

Lake Traverse, straddling the border of South Dakota and Minnesota, experienced a significant fish kill discovered March 14, that resulted in the death of thousands of fish. Tests are ongoing to pinpoint the exact cause of the die-off, but, according to Chris Domeier, Minnesota DNR Ortonville area fisheries supervisor, the lake exhibited high oxygen levels throughout the winter.

Nope, not Easter eggs… it’s northern pike egg-take season in Minnesota

The mild winter has prompted new concerns for Minnesota fisheries offices, particularly regarding the northern pike egg take. The state’s unusually early ice-out initiated pike reproduction ahead of when it normally takes place.
Craig Soupir, DNR Waterville fisheries area supervisor, noted that while egg collection for pike typically occurs at the end of March, this year it started in mid-March.

Is carp deterrent coming to Minnesota waters of the Mississippi? More funding might just be available

The 2024 Minnesota legislative session is about a month old and, so far, there’s been no hearings or discussions regarding a bill relating to a carp deterrent at Lock and Dam 5 on the Mississippi River, even though it was a hot topic leading into the session.
But later this month, there’s a potential way to get the design and construction of the deterrent funded this session.
