Minnesota DNR seeks public input on proposal to expand elk zone

The Minnesota DNR is seeking public input on a proposal to expand the boundaries of elk Zone 20 by about six miles to the west and three miles to the south. This zone is near Lancaster, near the Canadian border.
Minnesotans may provide input on the proposal until March 30 by contacting Jason Wollin, DNR Karlstad-area wildlife manager. Comments also may be submitted to Barb Keller, the DNR’s big-game program supervisor.

Minnesota swan bill includes lead ban, ‘protected’ areas

A recently-introduced bill in the Minnesota Legislature would protect swan resting areas and ban lead sinkers in those designated spots. The Minnesota Swan Protection Act would allocate about $1 million to both the Minnesota DNR and Pollution Control Agency to enforce those components of the bill.

Steelhead population progresses in Minnesota waters of Lake Superior

The steelhead (rainbow trout) population in Minnesota waters of Lake Superior is growing again with the hopes of fisheries managers that it can return to the levels of the 1950s and ’60s. Lake Superior DNR Fisheries officials have used more than 15 years of management plans to bring steelhead back to fishable levels.

Crookston hunter takes new Minnesota bear record with muzzleloader

Ben Genereux never misses a goose hunt. Even if the day before this goose hunt keeps him up into the early-morning hours due to a bear hunt he’ll never forget.
On Sept. 3, 2022, Genereux killed the new Minnesota state record bear with a muzzleloader after shooting a 463-pound live weight bear in Polk County. The skull scored 21 9/16.

Minnesota border waters likely to see high spring fishing traffic

The Rainy River is one of the most popular rivers to fish along the Canadian border. There are plenty of trophy fish in its waters, but anglers need to be aware of the rules.
Matt Skoog, Baudette fisheries area supervisor for the DNR, said the most popular fish in the Rainy are walleyes, sauger, lake sturgeon, northern pike, and smallmouth bass. Depending on the time of year, some fish are easier to catch than others.

Minnesota bills would allow crossbows for all during archery season

Bills have been introduced in the Minnesota Legislature that would allow anyone, regardless of age, to use a crossbow for the entire archery season. The topic has been discussed for several years.
House File 2716 (authored by Rep. Samantha Vang, DFL-Brooklyn Center) and Senate File 2565 (authored by Sen. Foung Hawj, DFL-St. Paul) would strike the text that says “age 60 and over,” to make it accessible for everyone.
