Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to add 199 impairments to 2024 waters list

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency released its proposed impaired waters list for 2024 on Nov. 14. The agency added 199 impairments on more than 54 bodies of water, which is a decrease from the 2022 list.
The additions will create a total of 6,349 impairments on 2,798 bodies of water all-time, but the list did remove 27 listings for improved water quality. Leya Charles, MPCA impaired waters coordinator, said the 2024 proposed list is an 82% decrease in water body listings and a 52% decrease in impairments compared to the 2022 proposed list.

Tagged fish lead to historic week for Asian carp captures on Pool 6 of the Mississippi

Kayla Zankle, Minnesota DNR invasive carp specialist, and her fisheries team spent many long, frustrating days this past summer trying to catch and tag Asian carp. Some days consisted of removing logs and other debris from their gill nets in the Mississippi River.
That spring and summer work paid off Thursday, Nov. 30, when the Minnesota DNR partnered with the Wisconsin DNR to catch 323 carp in Pool 6 of the river. It was the largest single capture of Asian carp in Minnesota to date.

Southeast Minnesota hunter kills 200-inch bucks in back-to-back seasons off 40-acre farm

Many hunters dream of shooting a buck whose antlers score over 200 inches. It’s a rarity to record two 200-inch bucks in a lifetime.
But Luke Onstad of Spring Grove, Minn., achieved that rare accomplishment in back-to-back seasons. In 2022, he harvested a 22-point nontypical buck with a 236 7/8-inch gross score and a 232 4/8 net score. In 2023, he shot another 22-point nontypical buck with a gross score of 207 inches and a net score of 202, as measured prior to the standard 60-day drying period.

Minnesota deer harvest still lagging behind 2022’s total after start of muzzleloader season

Minnesota’s deer firearms season concluded Nov. 26 with the end of the 3B hunt, and deer harvest numbers remain down by 7% compared with 2022. There are a few deer hunting opportunities left, like muzzleloader (ends Dec. 10), archery, and a chronic wasting disease management hunt, before the final harvest numbers are complete.
Todd Froberg, Minnesota DNR big-game program coordinator, said he expects that 7% to stay consistent through the last month of hunting. If so, this will be the fourth straight year of decreased harvest totals.

Ice fishing kicking off in Minnesota as ice slowly thickens; here’s a report from many popular areas

The transition from open water to hard water is slowing beginning in northern Minnesota, with many areas seeing “walkable” ice thickness – enough to start the hard-water season.
The central and southern parts of the state are waiting for consistent colder weather before ice-fishing anglers will step onto the lakes. In central and southern Minnesota, the temperatures have been below freezing during the evenings, but are forecasted to climb to highs in 30s or low 40s for the upcoming week.
